Who has CMV virus?

Hi All,

Just wondering if someone has this virus and it's causing their colits, if so, what are they taking as far as medication for it?

I have CMV and I am taking Valganciclovir (Vancyte) for it. Started with infusions for almost a month, and then switched to pills.

Thanks for responding, do you think your medication helped with your UC? When I take Valtrex, I don't know if that's the same thing you're taking, but it almost immediatly helps witht he pain in my rectum. How were you dx with CMV? Blood test or scope?

Hi Linda,

I got diagnosed through colonoscopy. The medicine I am taking is different from what you are taking. I can't tell if it helped my UC since I got CMV and C-Diff at the same and during my UC flare. I am feeling better, but just can't tell what exactly helped what since I am on prednisone for UC, vancyte for CMV and Vanco for C-Diff. I know something (or all) is helping since I am better, but I am not 100% yet as I still have abdominal pain, urges, mucus, etc. just not as bad as when it all started.

In case you don't know there is also a condition called CMV colitis. Are you sure you have UC? May be it is just a CMV colitis. Or did you get CMV after a while you have had UC?

CMV itself is very common I read, but affects colon very very rarely. It usually affects people with suppressed immune system.

when this all started I was having tiny blisters on the top of my lip, I was saying to myself I have these little cold sores, so maybe it was all the virus coming out.

I will ask my GI doc when I see her in August if she checked me for CMV. I feel better taking the Valtrex generic form, less pain, I'm able to sleep during the night better too. Is it safe to take a antibiotic as well? I should be taking zithromax for my Lyme's disease.

Pretty much everyone carries CMV...it's just latent, not active.
