I did a degree in the UK as a foreign student. You are covered on the NHS while you're at school I believe (it was almost 10 years ago and I can't remember too well). My experience of the NHS is that even though they are supposed to check your papers/visa etc if you need to see a doctor, they very very rarely do. If you're covered on the NHS, I believe you'll only have to pay a set amount for any perscription (I lived there until three years ago and it was 6 Pounds per script at the time). If you stay on and start working there, you'll be covered. Which university are you considering? You might want to contact them and ask them for detailed information for foreign students.

Ok, I dont honestly know about the specific meds you are talking about ...bc I only have experience with asacol, and certain rectal foams, and I dont know the generic/specific name associated with them, BUT, saying that, you will be covered by the National Health Service (NHS). I live in the UK and you MAY have to pay a small fee for each perscription you are on, but its only about £7, you can check the exchange rate, Im sorry I dont know where you are in the world or Id do it for you. But the NHS is VERY generous. I should think that if you have a GOOD gi you should get the treatment you need. I would suggest that upon arriving in the UK you visit your local GP. Tell them your whole medical history. Get your records, share them with your local gp once you arrive. They should be able to get you the meds you need and you may have to pay a small fee. It may be the case that you dont have to pay for them at all, depending on your status. I cant answer that one. Either way, you will be covered for your medications. I suggest you getting an appointment with your local gp. Tell them your condition and they will tell you where to go from there.

Hey justwrong, the meds are not free in the mainland UK unless you are on governement benefits. Just to clarify that. Im in plymouth, lived in manchester and they've never been free. There is about a £7 fee for every script (I think, but they arent free here).

Do you know where you're going to be studying in the UK?

I dont know if Im going to sound controvercial now but Id stay to the south of the country. I wasnt happy anywhere in the North with any of my medical care here. That would leave Aberdeen out.

As for your meds the prescription charge is just over 7 pounds per item, thus GP could write 2X 24 Asacol suppositories that would be 2 boxes but charged as one item. Now you are limited to drugs available on the \NHS

Asacol, Suppositories, tablets and in foam forms.

Sulfasalazine, plain or coated

Pred foam

Unfortunately pred suppositories have been unavailable for some time but you could use dispersable steroids and place in rectum

As for the biologics etc can only be prescribed by a GI initially not a GP without consent from GI.

So long as you register which is free with a GP surgery, have a permanent address, and apply for medical card you will get free care. In England just because you register with one GP you may not necessarily see that person on every appointment as there is normally more than one GP in every practise.

Hospital care is for emergency only, we do not use the ER just to see a DR, these are for emergency use only.
