Hernia: Should I talk to GI? Can I travel?

Hi,

This is my first post, however I've been reading here for quite awhile.
I have had a diurnal hernia (mild I think, goes in when I lay down) for the past few months. My GI kinda shrugged it off and referred me to a surgeon, however the referral is taking much longer than expected and I can't get in till the end of August... and I've since been planning a trip overseas, just haven't bought the plane ticket yet.

I am not quite in remission yet, but the hernia has gotten more painful over the weekend and the associated stress isn't helping...

Should I talk to my GI about travelling with a hernia? Or would a walk-in clinic be more appropriate for a non-colitis related issue?
Does anyone have any experience coping with pre-surgery hernias? Or travelling with one?

Welcome to the forum.

I would go to the regular doctor with this question. Traveling with a hernia is fine, I had hernia for years. But, you have to listen to your body of course. Go and talk to a regular doctor, that is my opinion.

Hi and welcome to HW :) I've never had a hernia but my FIL has and he was in a lot of pain with his. I would call up your GI  and get his take on it before going anywhere. 

Edited to add: you can still ask your primary too about this....which ever one is more readily available.

Hi, sorry to hear u r in pain.

I have had 3 hernias. All which caused pain. My GI did not handle those, it was a general surgeon who did the repairs. I would suggest that u call the surgeon office u have the appt. w/ and explain the situation and see what they say. If they don't give u an answer, u can try ur primary.
From my experience, and urgent care center, or walk in clinic will NOT see me due to the UC, they ALWAYS make me go to the hospital (for fear there is an issue w/ the bowel), so i don't bother to ever go there anymore.

My surgeon said that with a hernia that goes in & out (like urs) can be tricky and that if u ever have severe pain w/ it, that u have to go to the ER right away incase it got twisted and causes blockages. Im not sure i would want to do that overseas??? In any case, i was told no lifting anything over 5-10lbs also.
