Just wanted to add a new tip: making yogurt in a thermos (no oven required)(just need heat to begin)
We're going on a long vacay tomorrow, driving the van but stopping at motels too along the way and I won't have an oven but will have microwaves every now and then.
I bought a wide mouth thermos, heated the milk in microwave, cooled it first then put into the thermos for 24 hours--
perfect yogurt!. My starter was VSL#3 but I could've used a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt instead.
You have to remove it from the thermos to cool it in the fridge/cooler after it's done but since I drip mine anyway that's not an extra step. Important to let the thermos sit still for 24 hours, those probiotics don't like exercise (movement) too much.
I may not make it more than once since there will always be a Walmart near with Greek yogurt (I hope) but for those without ovens this is a way make yogurt away from home.
One of the stops I hope to make is to find a Trader Joe's, I hear good things about
it here. We don't have one in South Florida.
