Black Stool

I just had a BM and it was as black as coal and loose. I have been taking Iron supplements so I am hoping that this is what caused this black color. I had dark stools before but never so Black. Any thoughts?

Black stools could be a very bad sign. I would go get checked out.

I've had iron pills cause some crazy stools, dark, even greenish. It may be causing your issue.

I believe iron pills can cause black stools, as well as some other meds (Pepto Bismol?!) but as with everything, I'd watch it and perhaps call the doc.

It is probably the iron supplements or bi****h (Pepto Bismol) , but could be bleeding high up in your colon is just a possiblity.

I'd stop with the iron pills. If your stools don't lighten within a few days of stopping the iron pills, then I'd see a doctor about it.

Definitely could be the iron. Stop taking it and see if the color changes.

How are you feeling overall? My gastro, who subspecializes in IBD treatment, has commented that iron supplementation is tricky because oral tabs can lead to "clumping" in the intestines, causing cramps. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I feel good but get tired late in the day. Iron supplements and B12 seem to help. Still in minor flare. Thanks for info. Latest bm is more brown like normal.

It is probably the iron.Blueberry juice can cause dark stool too.When i was having iron my stools were sometimes green and when i was having blueberry juice they were darker.

Iron supplements can indeed cause black stools, but you should still get it checked out cuz if it's not from the iron, then black tarry stools are a very dangerous sign of bleeding from high up (it's black cuz it's old blood). Get it checked out.
