What dose do you take? Seems like most people are on 50mg but I have heard of people taking up to 100mg.

When I tried 6MP last year I was on 50mg. for about 4 months.  While tapering prednisone to get off it and hopefully 6MP take over my doctor ordered prometheus blood tests and found out that I needed 75mg. to be therapuetic (at least).  I tried 75mg. and it made me sick - like flu symptoms so doctor took me off.

i started out on 50 mg, and then we did a bloodtest and i was not in the theraputic range, so my doc upped it to 75 mg, which is what i am on now.  i am in the process of trying to decrease my prednisone now and hoping 6mp will do what it's supposed to do!  i hope it works for you!

I hope it works for you too Kate. What dose of prednisone are you on?

I went up to 75mg 6mp the other day and I am tapering as well. I am at 10mg now. I just had the blood test to see if I am in the theraputic range the other day. She said I may be able to go back down to 50mg but we will see. I wonder how long until I get the results? She did say that my CBC looked good. My GI is very positive, she said most of her patients do very well on 6mp. I hope we can both get off prednisone quickly!

I'm at 100mg. Never noticed any side effects really.

I am on Imuran, 150 mg.  Its the parent compound of 6MP.  I understand that patients need to take a smaller dose of 6 MP to match the Imuran amount.  If I had to guess I would say it's equivalent to 100 mg of 6 MP.  I don't why my GI doc prefers Imuran over 6 MP.  All I do know is that almost the same med and it's working very well.  No issues what so ever.  My colitis is in remission.  Things may change in the future but this med really helped me out.  I wish U the best.

I was on 50 mgm of 6MP for about seven years. It really didn't keep me out of flares. The doctor increased my dosage last summer to 100 mgm and boy did that ever make me sick! My liver enzymes were twice the normal limits and I just felt like crap. He took me off the 6MP two weeks prior to starting Remicade. As you can tell by my profile all meds eventually failed. I had a total colectomy and perm. ileo on June 28th...only taking two pills a day now instead of anywhere from 17 - 25. The pills I am on are Prevacid (and that will be over in five weeks) and prednisone 10 mgm and tapering...hope to be off it in three weeks. HOORAY!!!

i am on 25mg of prednisone (originally i was on 40 mg - i need to update my signature!) and 75 mg of mercaptopurine.  wow, you are lucky to be at 10mg prednisone already, notsosicklygirl!!!  you are almost there girl!   i have been decreasing my pred verrrrrry slowly due to an unsuccessful previous taper.  it is agonizing, because i am a bloated mess.  i hope i will go back to looking normal again and feeling well.  as far as that blood test, i usually get the results back within a week and a half.  hang in there - i'll be thinking of you!

I started at 25mg, worked up to 50 mgs and I can't get into the proper range so my GI increased me to 100mgs on Monday and Thursday - 50mgs for rest of the days. I still can't get into the proper range but the dose I am on keeps me out of severe flares. I still flare but it's much more milder now.

Kate, I am in the same boat. I had a previous unsuccessful taper and I am trying to taper slower. My GI would like me to decrease the dose every 5 days but she also says not to taper if I have any symptoms. I am more comfortable going 7-10 days per dose because I am worried I will relapse again. I really want to be off but I'd rather go slower than risk it not working. I am not sure if going slower is helping... so far so good. Last time I started having symptoms at about 10mg, I am really stressed that things will not work out for me. I feel like I have the worst luck ever.

yes, it does sound like we're in the same boat!  my gi wants me to taper every 7 days, but i am doing a taper every 14 days or so because i'm not always stable after 7 days.  i guess all we can do is try.  it is very stressful, i'm with you on that!  it has been a bad couple of years for me.  we  need some good things to happen for us!

I've been on 75 mgs a day for 6 1/2 years. So far so good.

Daughter is on 50 mgs of 6MP, while taking 400 Remicade every 7 weeks. Don't know why doc still wants both, but she feels it gives the Remi a boost and that patients work better on both. She is probably under the range that is therapeutic. She is in remission.

I was just increased to 100mg a day and tapering the Prednisone 5mg a day. Nothing seems to be working but hopefully after the colonoscopy on Friday they will be able to do something to control this.
