Kefir grains are supposed to be a "give away" sort of thing. It's okay to pay for postage, but traditionally they are simply given to anyone who wants/needs them.
I've heard that if you receive dormant grains they will take a few days to "revive" and start doing their thing. If you try for a few days and nothing happens, they've probably died.
I'm in central NC and will happily share if anyone around here wants them.
Mine have been making nice thick creamy kefir for me. I use a clean regular pint size mason jar with about a tablespoon of grains. Pour in the milk place the mason jar lid very loosely on top (not screwed on, just sitting there) and let the whole thing just sit on my counter for 24 hours. After that time, strain the liquid out into a clean jar, remove grain cluster from my strainer and place it in a new clean jar, start all over again! I have been doing this for about a month and at first I found it kind of intimidating, but it seems so easy now. I even brought my little culture with me on a 2 week road trip!
Usually I blend my daily 2 cups of kefir with some frozen fruit and make smoothies. I've also used it with baking (makes decent quiche too).
