If antibiotics are needed, do you request a certain kind?

Considering the debate about whether antibiotics play a role in causing UC or starting a flare..If you are told by a doctor, do you request a certain brand? I am very prone to strep throat and that is the prescribed fix.

What about doing an antibiotic shot? Then it avoids the digestive system all together?

Seems many here have those that affect them and those that don't.  I think my first flare came after a double dose of amoxicillin.  BUT - recently I had sinus infection - twice - and took a z-pak which is closely related to amoxicillin (penicillin) and did fine.  It would be interesting to find out about the shot - seems like a good idea!  I always double up on probiotic Align when taking the antibiotics.

I usually ask for the Z-pack because it doesn't bother my Uc. I am sensitive to a lot of antibiotics and I flare with certain ones especially Cipro. I take 4 Amoxicillin before any dental procedures and it sometimes bothers and sometimes not. It's about trial and error about which one will be better for you. But it might be wise to avoid any antibiotics and end in 'cilin or 'cycline.

You can request a certain kind, but if you have an infection where that particular antibiotic will be useless, it's best to be on one that can deal with the infection rather than helping it become a super bug/infection.


Zithromax works awesome for me as well. But my chest/sinus infections are pretty straight forward and have always reacted positively.



I've also used Clavulin and Septra and amoxicillin with positive results.

Thanks for the feedback. Back from the doc and no strep. Im sure it will come soon enough. As I usually get it a couple times in the winter. I too have used the z pac and I dont remember it affecting me.
