8 YR OLD SON ON PRED.

He started 40 mg. of prednisone on Thursday of last week and he is still throwing up. God please help my little man. He goes for an Upper GI tommorrow. When I was on pred my symptoms went away within a day or two. How long has it taken for you guys?

First I am so sorry about your son, as you know my 15 year old daughter has uc. When she was in the hospital, they had to up her dose of pred because it wasn't working. Also I hope you are taking him to a childrens gastroenterologists. I didn't at first and I think that was the biggest mistake I had ever made.

If it takes a week by IV they consider that a good response apparently. Give it a little more time. Have there been any changes at all? I hope he's better very soon.

No changes really. Worried mom 1 He is seeing a GI out of Childrens hospital here(in Wisconsin). I love the guy. My sons pediatrition referred us to him. He is on top of things and doing everything possible to see if he has crohn's or not. He is hoping it is an infection of some kind but isn't to sure. He is worried because he has chronic inflammation in his belly and accute in his small intestine, large intestine is fine. He is also worried because I have UC. I just wish we would find out either way. Thanks everyone

For me, 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. Healing is slow in the GI tract. Sounds like you are getting good care for your son.

I would think he should be feeling better within a few days. That is how pred works for me--although it takes longer than it used to (when I was younger I'd feel better just hours after my first dose).
Also I have found that if I start tapering before my symptoms are significantly better, like almost normal, I will usually flare again when I am almost tapered off and have to start over.
40 is not the maximum dose. I am frequently on 60 and occasionally on 80. Not that I recommend that, but maybe with all the throwing up he needs a little more.
