When to go to the hospital...

What's your limit? How bad do you let it get before you go to the ER when its not dr's office hours? I suddenly got wicked diarrhea and horrible cramping and mucus. (not to be gross)  I had C Diff a few weeks ago, if its that again, do I really have to go to the hospital? All they're going to do is give me unwanted painkillers. And then maybe anti-biotics and fluids. I hate to go when it's stuff I can do at home except for the antibiotics.  Sigh....I need advice.

I think it's different for every individual. I personally wouldn't go to the hospital unless I was literally dying. I hate hospitals and I would feel uncomfortable - I would avoid it at all costs. I know there is a point where you have to face reality that you need help NOW and you can't get what you need in your medicine cabinet. I can imagine a point where that would be the case, even for me. If you're really dealing with intense pain, and frequency, and possibly c. diff, you may not have a choice. I hope you're feeling better and that you don't have to go to the hospital. On the positive side, at least you still have insurance. Better to go while you're insured!

Don't worry about being "gross" If you can't keep up your fluids, make sure you go to the ER because it can be a losing battle.

You're right, there's little else they can do besides pain killers, prednisone and flagyl. Then again, if you have a fever, they would probably admit you.

For me its when I start failing on the fluids side. You can only take in so much water etc when your not feeling ok before just need that helping hand. Expensive yeah but better then being sick longer IMO

Same here. I only go to the ER when I feel like I'm dying. And then there were times I felt like I was dying and was too sick to even make it to ER, like the time when I was suffering from food poisoning in Hong Kong... I couldn't get off of the bathroom floor for the whole night.

When I went for a colitis flare, I was severely dehydrated and anemic and my colon was like dog meat. It was a grave disappointment when all they did was fill me up with liquid (by IV) and send me home. They wouldn't treat me, because I hadn't been diagnosed with IBD yet.

I ended up going to the hospital. I am actually in the ER right now, I drank some contrast dye and now I'm waiting to do a cat scan. Fun fun

I never want to go to the hospital because at the hospital they can't do much for you, unless your doctor has already ordered this, this and that.
They give you a pain killer that does nothing, take some 'pictures' of your insides, say there is nothing surgically wrong, and send you on your way.
The only time I actually stayed in a hospital overnight was when my doctor said I needed to go to the hospital, because I feared I couldn't make it without reliving myself to a doctor's appointment that day. (And even then, I stayed less than 24 hours.)

Wow...worse c.diff than last time? what meds were you on then and now what are you on?

You've been though the proverbial wringer with this stuff...yikes!!

They did a colonoscopy and couldn't find anything wrong w me. I was the last patient for the day so the doc will come 2moro to go over results. I hate this, it makes me feel like a hypochondriac and I'm not.
