Breast feeding whilst taking Imuran??

Hi all,

I am 33 weeks pregnant and all through my pregnancy I have been told that I can NOT breastfeed. Well today that changed when I saw my doctor and he said new research has been released to say that breastfeeding should be safe for users of imuran. I am currently taking 100mg's. Now I am confused and unsure of what to do.

I really would love to hear from others who have been on Imuran whilst being pregnant and if they breast fed their babies or not.

Please share your thoughts and stories with me.

I a, delivering today - being induced... I am not on Imuran yet but the plan is to start is soon. I have been told not to breastfeed while on it - that is why I am not starting it right away. I would like to try to breastfeed for 6 weeks first then switch the baby to formula and start Imuran. If I flare very badly before 6 weeks I will stop breastfeeding and go on Imuran. Starting tomorrow I will change from Lialda to Apriso and Entocort - I am told both are okay while breastfeeding. Lialda has worked okay for me but has not completely controlled flares so that is why I am switching...best of luck to you!

Hi, my GI doctor also told me that new research shows that breastfeeding on Imuran is OK and that the benefits outweigh the risks. I'm on 125mg of Imuran and have been breastfeeding my son since he was born 4.5 months ago. He's gained weight normally and hasn't had any problems, not even a cold. Good luck with your decision!

My last pregnancy I was on Pred and had tapered off by 23 weeks, I was fine untill delivery and flared less than a week later. Back onto Pred with dose going up and down for months. I breastfed untill my daughter was 7 months old and I had a very bad flare and pred would not do a thing. IV Solumedrol for a week as well as Cipro (which I have deemed useless and I dont see why dr's keep prescribing it) So I had to stop breastfeeding because of the very high doses of steroids. I have been on Imuran for just over 2 months now, have tapered off prednisone for the first time completely in a year... and am taking various supplements. I have never felt better and am currently 7 weeks pregnant. I was also curious about breastfeeding while on Imuran as I had read it being "safe" for pregnancy but not for bf? Hearing that you have no problems with your son makes me alot more comfortable with the idea.
