Have any of you experienced and used probiotics when having an active UC?

Hi,

my brother have UC and I'm a reseacher working with probiotics. I know that probiotics have shown good results sometime in treating active UC but the doctors do not seem to be sure about how good they are. As I'm workning with this bacteria and also have recently developed a new probiotic product I would like to help my brother but I wonder how good probiotics may be for his condition. I have read lots of sceinticfic reports but would like to know about your experiences that have tested probiotics.

Many people use the with active UC and find them very helpful.

I use probiotics daily and double the dose when I am experiencing symptoms - the probiotics help reduce symptoms for me.

Great! it feels much better to get feedback from you! as when reading I got a little bit unsure of telling my brother to use probiotics. I don't think that his doctor has recomended them to him, which I found strange as they are very common in Spain. Then, of course you got the differences in probiotics as not all of them are the same and thus have different qualities.

For me it is sometimes hard to know what is helping or hurting. U.C. symptoms can ebb and flow even when you take the same meds and eat the same things. Also when I am flaring I tend to throw several things at it at the same time.

From my experience, VSL#3 did not help in a flare, a probiotic called primal defense did, but like I said there were a lot of potentially confounding factors going on. I probably didn't take enough VSL#3 to make any difference.

I do think VSL#3 does help me stay in remission however, but I can't be 100% sure. I switched recently to the prescription strength version VSL#3DS which has a lot more bacteria in it, nearly 1 trillion.

What is VGL#3?

I would need a perscription from the doctor to get it?

VSL#3 is available online.... you might try googling it. I've bought it from the company that makes it, Sigma Tau.
The DS - Double Strength - is prescription only. For me, that means my prescription insurance will cover part, which helps.

Have I tried??? Yes! I have tried making my own yogurt, kombucha, fermenting foods, buying capsules, VSL#3. Honestly all the time and money i've spent trying to see no results would make some people cringe but for me, it's fun to make things so I don't worry about it too much. To each his own. It may not help me but it does help many people so give it a shot!

It made a big difference for me in my recent flare. Dr had never suggested probiotics before, but his nurse did. I'm glad I listened as I think they made a big improvement in my symptoms. When I mentioned it to the dr he sounded surprised.. said some say they really help, others don't.
