Apriso

I have a question for those taking Apriso. Were you actively flaring when you were prescribed Apriso and did it help put you into remission? OR were you already put into remission by something else i.e. prednisone and then given the Apriso to keep you in remission? I have been on Apriso for a couple months now, the first when I was actively flaring. Then I was on Prednisone, helped a ton, tapered off and stayed on the Apriso. Thought I was in remission and Apriso would keep me there. However, I have been having an active flare for the last few days and my cbc showed a really high inflammation with the esr. Not sure what all that mumbo jumbo means, but the dr. said I was inflamed apparently. So, now do I need something else and then keep on the Apriso I am wondering.....I know none of you are dr.'s but just was wondering how Apriso has helped you. Thanks:)

I am working on a flare right now. I came off of Colozal and I am currently taking 8 Apriso capsules a day. I also have been doing hydrocortisone enema's trying to stay OFF the prednisone. My Dr. assures me people can experience relief from a flare from drugs such as Apriso or Lialda. I have always had to go on prednisone to get back into remission. Once I was able to kick it with the hydrocortisone enemas only. But I'm on my second month of enema's this time....not kicking it this time around.
I am trying to be very positive and hope that he is right and I can get myself back on track with the Apriso dosage. I assume I will ween back to a smaller dosage when I experience a solid remission.
(KNOCK ON WOOD) I have been feeling a little better yesterday and today with little bleeding. I have not changed anything else other than the Apriso for the very purpose of knowing whether it's going to work. I know it can take 4-6 weeks for full benefit.
Dr. says he's had people feel better within one week.

I'm in a icky flare right now; happened because I was taking no maintenance meds. So when i started feeling bad and showing symptoms, I started my earlier-prescribed dose of 4 apriso pills daily. I did this for 2 weeks, with no real effect. Then i started taking a mesalamine enema, which helps dramatically.

Maybe if i was taking 8 pills/day it would help with my flare, but I def. think that the dose of 4/day isn't doing much of anything. :(

Yeah, that is what I was afraid of. The apriso works better for keeping UC patients in remission rather than putting them into remission. After I got off the Pred I thought I would stay in remission because of the Apriso. But I am actively flaring now and it looks like I will have to start the Prednisone again. I was only on it for a month before so maybe that wasn't long enough for full remission. I just had about a month and a half of normalcy.

Read the documentation with your Apriso. It only helped 12% in one clinical trial and 17% in another clinical trial.

I want to switch to sulfasalzine and away from mesalamines, I tried a mesalamine enema once and a quart of blood came out. Cortisone enemas seem to work as expected.

A flare is hard to stop with alternative methods once underway, prednisone is for the short term halt to the flare, with a long term maintenance drug taking over after the flare is beat such as mesalamines

Apriso or Lialda helps me only if I am in a mild flare (i.e. no bleeding).  If I am flaring milding then these meds seem to help when the dosage is upped.  They also help me stay out of major flares.  When I do have a major flare up they do not get me out of it though....I always have to add something else such as rectal meds or pred if my flare gets severe.

Apriso works to get you there, I think you need to work both ends though like Quincy says. Cortenema really helps.
