Prednisone...should I be worried about this side effect?

I just started prednisone today at 40mg for a week, then 35mg for another week, etc. for 2 months.  about 1 & 1/2 hours after I started taking it I began having frequent urges to urinate.  For the remainder of the day and still, I had/have to pee every 10-15 minutes.  A fair amount comes out each time, so it's not just an urge.  After I realized this, I looked at the pharmacy info attached to my prescription.  It listed frequent urination as a serious side effect.  I called my doctor and left a message and she returned my call but I wasn't home.  She will call again tomorrow morning.  I have also felt like I had a fever all day.  When I got home, I took my temperature.  It was low grade at 100.3

My question is:  Is this something I need to worry about?  I read on another site about this drug and someone said she got diabetes from it.  shocked   As I said, I only have 40 mg in me, but I am in no way agreeable to taking on another serious disease. nono

See a doctor. Another possibility could be a bladder infection. I got quite a few bladder infections after being on prednisone for three months at about the same dosage as you. It's a known side effect.

Prednisone can also raise your blood sugar, which tends to make you drink more and therefore urinate more. I agree you should check with your doctor in the morning. If the GI can't or won't help, your primary can check blood sugar and urine.

My Dr. called again earlier and I described these symtoms.  She said she's never heard about this side effect.  Which I think is odd because it's on my pharmacy info about prednisone...which I told her.  She's having me do a urine analysis first thing tomorrow morning and also not having me continue the prednisone until we figure out the results of the analysis and see if this med is causing my symptoms.  Thanks for your replies!

You shouldn't go from 40mg of prednisone to 0 overnight. I've heard that can cause serious problems.

What kind of problems will stopping it cause?  I really can't deal with anything new at this point. :(

Stopping prednisone suddenly can cause serious side effects. However, I think you need to be on it for more than a day or two for that to be an issue. I could be wrong though, I'm certainly not a medical professional. I would go with whatever your doctor is advising you to do with it.

Maybe it is ok if you just started it this morning. I am not sure. I am sure your doctor wouldn't guide you to do something that would be harmful.

I think its funny that your dr said that She said she's never heard about this side effect ..... I called my dr today and told them that the pred was giving me panic attacks ... and she said she has never heard of that side effect ... panic attacks is also a well know side effect ....

I am starting to wonder .... what do these doctors know ?!?

You can stop if you have only taken it for one day with no problems (40-0). It is only when you are on it for an extended period of time that you need to taper.

I agree. I drew up a red flag when you said that you were cutting it cold turkey. It's very strange the doctor said to do that.

She said she had only take prednisone for one day. There is no problem with stopping cold turkey after one day.

When a doctor says they never heard of that before, it is most likely that they never heard any of their patients say that before.

I too have read that it is okay to go cold turkey if you haven't been on pred for more than a week.

The reason for the concern of going cold turkey is that the body can go into shock. Basically, pred reduces the amount of cortisol that the body produces on its own. It takes time for the body to readjust when coming off of pred. If you took it only for a day, then the body never adjusted to producing less; so it won't need to adjust to producing more.

I got some really bad side effects when I tapered too quickly off of pred--cracking/popping joints, painful joints,...
