I think a GI appointment is a good idea.....
Not sure about
the oral meds. There used to be a list somewhere about
what 5-ASAs released where.... hmmm.
My understanding of mesalamine, which may be wrong, is that it works to a large extent topically, even the pills.
When I was taking 16 asacol a day (equivalent to 5 lialda, I believe) and two Rowasas a day I asked my GI about
too much mesalamine and he said it was really hard to overdose on it and not to worry.
Best I can understand, also is that, yes, the day after a Rowasa I also have gas and looser stools - but the gas is just a byproduct of the Rowasa, and the looser stools are because the Rowasa is not absorbed - so it's just that liquid mixed into the next day's stools. So it's not a "symptom" as we might usually think of loose stools.
When I am flaring I usually end up needing steroid enemas to stop the bleeding, and as far as I know those are the only other category of rectal meds besides the Rowasa... if the Rowasa works for you, it's about
the safest thing there is, so I'd stick to it if it helped me!
(Incidentally, I have a few glasses of wine every weekend.... doesn't affect my UC. And though I drink less coffee when flaring, I've yet to give it up completely.... I just have my limits, is all.)
But.... we're all different.
