Sounds good, only concern is, to me it sounds like its a symptomatic treatment. I would instead like to see a drug that checks in the causes of this reduction in phosphatidylcholine (but from my current knowledge, its a pandora's box)

Still a step further is not too bad.

i'm totally with you on that - i agree it would be great to find something that treats the cause.  but none of the drugs out now do.  at least with this drug it would be better than steroids or remicade!  it's less dangerous and has fewer horrific side effects!  plus it doesn't screw with your immune system.  i wish it would be available now, because so many of us need something else to try.

Very interesting! I agree, some discovery that would stop UC by addressing the cause early on in the disease process would be ideal - but, say, for me where I am now, this sounds as if it might be a good medication!
Hearing about new thinking in regard to UC always gives me such a feeling of hope!

yeah, it is hopeful! i'm going to try to stay on top of this - i'll let you know when i hear anything new, like when it will be available. i want it NOW! :)

so in theory a banana enema might help? seems absurd but, hey. people put all kinds of enemas up the butt.

It will be great to have this soon. But you don't have to wait for it. The "drug" is really phosphatisylcholine (PC) rich soy lecithin that you can buy from many health food stores. The trick is to get it to the colon without getting absorbed in the upper GI tract. Many folks have used lecithin enema.

sakiv46, you are right - PC is available.  but it's not available that i know of in delayed release form (which is key to it getting to the colon).  do you know where i could find it in delayed release form???

kate22, as far as I know, delayed release PC is not available anywhere. Four years ago I even aproached some compounding pharmacies to have it made but no luck.

Some people, including me, have used it in enema form. Of course, it is quite experimental. But it has been quite helpful for me. Not an instant remedy though. Takes 2-4 weeks to see positive results but worth it (at least for me). I continued enemas for about 6 months. Kept me in remission for four years --longest for me.

I have followed this research with a lot of interest. The reserachers have formed a company called Lipid Therapeutics. You can vist their website to see the progress. They are just finishing up a phase III clinical trial in Europe.

If you do a search on this site with "phosphatidylcholine" and "lecithin", you will find quite a few interesting threads from 2007-08.

sakiv46, you mentioned you maintained remission for 4 years with a lecithin enema. did you stop using it and found you started to flare again? or have you had a flare while on the enema? I am curious because none of the meds are working for me, and am considering surgery, but if there is another medicine available (in theory, soon) I may hold out.

chef patrick, I did PC enema for about 6 months and then stopped after I was well out of my flare. I was on low dose Lialda (1-2 tablets per day) for next four years without any flare. The trick is to find a way to make lecithin suspend in water for the enema. The only thing which worked for me was to dissolve 1 teaspoon lecithin granules into 1/2 cup water and then empty the contents of 8-10 softgels of Phosphatidylcholine (from Swanson Vitamins) as best as I could. Shake it well and shoot it up using an empty enema bottle!

I know they have spent a lot of money developing controlled release PC,but too bad they will make a drug out of it. Which means you will have to get it through your doc, and cannot buy it OTC. Its food after all, it is the coating that is important. They would sell a lot more if it was OTC, no matter what price as long as it worked.

i talked to a compounding pharmacy to see if they could make it for me.  they have some sort of delayed release powder that would be combined w/the PC drug, and then put into a capsule.  they said they can't make a delayed release capsule...that would have to be manufactured.  thus, they use the powder.  i wonder if the powder would enable the PC to get to the colon?

Do they mean combining some sort of delayed release powder with PC and putting it in a gelatin capsule? Do you know what the powder is called?

A good pharmacist should be able to figure out whether this would work. They have to make sure that PC bypasses not only stomach but also the small intenstine. I will take it even if they think 25-50% of PC will be available for the colon. In the research trials, dosage was 2gm of PC per day (which translates to 8-10 gm of soy lecithin), divided into two doses per day.
