I have been flaring pretty bad since June after a course of antibiotics for a UTI. I've had one full course of steroid enemas and I'm currently still on them. I had my meds switched to the new combo 6mp/Allopurinol. Yesterday was horrible! I was in soooo much pain from the cramping even with taking 20mgs of Bentyl 3xs a day - think 8-9 on the pain scale. I have been waking up a couple time a night because of the cramping and it would ease after going to the bathroom - I haven't had to get up in the middle of the night for my Uc in a very long time so that was a shocker. I was an emotional wreck yesterday thinking that this flare would never turn around.

Until today! I woke up and I still had to go to the bathroom upon waking. But the cramping was minimal. By this time in the morning, I would've already been in the bathroom 6-10 times, almost crying in pain and shaking like a leaf. But this morning it was down to 3 with minimal pain. I still have that burning twisty feeling in my gut but it's much more milder. I am getting optimistic! I do believe this flare is turning around yeah

I am not going to get all ecstatic just yet because it's too early to tell. But keep your fingers crossed for me that I keep heading in the right direction!

That sounds great. Waking up in the middle of the night with symptoms is the worst. I really hope this trend continues. My blood has been almost nonexistent the past six days and I am like you, trying to temper my excitement, but hopefully it's the real deal for both of us.

That is how things happen for me, very quickly. One day terrible, the next day OK. I usually can't put my finger on the cause of the change. I Hope you continue to improve Sherry.

I'm crossing my fingers for you too Levi! I'm not at the blood free stage yet but it's becoming less and less. I was actually able to go somewhere right after I took a shower today - usually that would stimulate a cramping episode - but I didn't have any cramping.

WOW!!! awesome to hear you're doing better today! I certainly hope that this is the turn-around...

What a relief...it seems something is working for you.

yeah Happy happy dance! Another fairly good day! :-)

Still having bleeding though. When I did the enema last night, for some reason I was in A LOT of pain when I laid on my left side. I had to turn to my right within 5 minutes of doing the enema. Do the enemas still work when you lie on your right side? I'm thinking yes, but if that is the case, why do they tell you to lie on your left side after an enema for at least 30 minutes???

I am so, um, cautiously optimistic for you! lol!

I know the info says to lie on your left side... the sigmoid colon goes up (or down) the left side, but ... sometimes a backache or something prevents me from being on the left also, and it doesn't seem to affect the outcome much.
Sorry for the pain; do you think it was gut pain or just some nearby muscle...?

No it was definitely a gut pain. Around the 20cm mark is where the worse of the ulceration is (was) and whenever I bend over, I feel a sharp shooting pain in that area, not so much now. But it is still hard to lie on my left side, because it sort of feels like I'm putting pressure on that area like when I bend over. It's such an odd uncomfortable feeling.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about the position for the enemas... you are improving, and that's such a relief.....!!!

Yes, they still work...right side or left...
Usually laying on the left side can help lessen the urge to eliminate as well as it takes some of the pressure off the rectum. Of course, that's all subjective.

Do what you need to do to lessen the discomfort.

And which side is the ovary problems? If you're near your period or ovulating and that's the side that it's happening...could be part of it.

I have right side ovary issues. In fact, my right side has been hurting me lately and it feels like it's in the ovary area. I am just so tired of going to doctors, I've been putting it off. On my last Pap, she told me my right ovary was slightly enlarged, meaning probably another cyst :(

Possibly, ugh....what's the suggestion regarding the cyst?

Usually they just do the watch and wait approach to an ovarian cyst, but if it gets too large they go in and laproscopically drain it to avoid rupture. I had one already drained several years ago. This one I believe is not ready to be drained but it's getting close.

Yep, it's far better to roll onto your right side than to expel the bloomin' Cortenema due to left side discomfort. Hang in there! I do hope the flare is turning ... / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
