purple spots on the toilet... weird

I know this is weird, but I was just wanting to know if anyone else experiences the same thing and if you know what it is. My toilet often has purplish speckles and spots on the underside of the toilet seat etc. I'm assuming its from the stool splashing up, but don't know if its blood or from my Asacol?? It doesn't look like blood and often it happens even when I'm not seeing noticeable blood in the stool. I'm on a lot of Asacol, so maybe that's it? Anyone know?? I used to think it was my iron supplement, but I haven't been on that in a long time.

It's from the 5ASA....it's not blood.

I wash the entire seat after each bm...but once a finish has worn a bit, it's worse to get off.

I'm due to change the seat again....about once every year and a half...

I feel so bad having blood and mucous explode into my hosts' toilet. I always have to wipe it out. And the toilets are designed just so, so it gets everywhere lol

I too am currently getting purplish speckles. But, I'm getting them on the inside of the toilet bowl and the toilet top ring underneath the seat. Pretty much started when I began the oral Salofalk. I feared it was mildew....BUT it was returning too quickly(same day or next day) after a cleaning to be that.

Glad to find out the cause :-)

The purple marks are from Asacol. I used to buy only wooden seats that had a white finish and had to replace them a couple of times a year because once the finish wears off, the stains are permanent. I ended up going to Lowes and bought a 5 dollar white plastic seat and it cleans up perfectly. Haven't had to change it since I bought it - last summer!!! Sometimes the cheaper plastic seat is really the best. It even feels better on the butt. Not quite so hard as the wooden ones.

Yup, its 5ASA, not only asacol does it but colazal too. I find though that the colazal doesn't leave them as bad. The only way to get rid of them is to wash them off before they have time to set in. I don't really care about it at home but right now I'm staying at a family friend's house while I take a summer course and I make sure to wipe the underside of the seat down before I go home each week. I had my own bathroom in my dorm and I had to tell the hall director not to change out the toilet seat because I have the same room next year...embarassing, but I didn't want to be charged for a new seat.

It's from Canasa or Salofalk Suppositories. I used to get some pretty severe toilet staining on a daily basis. It wasn't really noticable after a day but after a few days, it looked speckled. It looked like someone put mold into my toilet. I blamed it on someone else and joked that we should send it to the lab for a culture. That aside, I find that bleach is helpful, sometimes you have to give a decent scrub to get the stains off, they are somewhat water-proof - like wax.

I agree with the plastic seat recommendation, the wood based or laminated wood ones are not worth the price/effort anymore.
It's a bit unsettling actually being able to see how much splashing and "water displacement" goes on after visits.

Funny story: I was living with a roommate and I kept seeing the purple stains on the toilet seat and I got angrier and angrier at her. You know, that real passive aggressive frustration. I assumed it was her and I wondered what she was doing in the bathroom -- girls typically using many more hair, face, body products than men. But one day it hit me very suddenly -- kind of like the shocking twist ending in the Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, etc. -- that the purple spots were from me (with obvious bad aim). I felt so bad. I had been so angry at her and here it was all my fault. I never broached the topic with her. She is probably still wondering what I was doing in the bathroom.

Thank you so much for posting this. Now my boyfriend can rest easy at night. He's been thinking I'm an alien or something :-) I even asked my obgyn if she knew what the spots were and she couldn't think of anything. Now I can tell her too!

yup i have same thing its my salofalk,,, i was really worried seeing this funny colour on my toilet :) but i felt at ease asking the same question on here,,, love this forum

I normally keep a container of disinfectant wipes by the toilet and wipe under the seat after use.  Haven't had any permanent stains yet!

I have just found this forum after some internet searching about what on earth these purple specks are! It does make me feel a whole lot better. The only thing is, I have been on 5-ASA (Pentasa, 4g per day) for 15 years and this has never ever happened. I have only noticed this since I started taking a folic acid supplement 2 months ago and wonder if there is some interaction? I may pose this to my Dr today.

After googling for most of an hour, I was so glad to find this forum. I've been cleaning the purple spatters off the underside of the toilet seat and both kids say "not me". But teenage son takes Lialda & Azathioprin for his Ulcerative Colitis. I was worried he was lying about a flare-up, and the "purple" was blood. So, to confirm, this is just a harmless side effect from the Lialda (mesalamine)? Thank you!

I'll be darned. I"ve been on Pentasa since 1996 and have used plastic toilet seats (I need the padding) all the while and never had the purple spotting. (Watch! Never say never, tomorrow the purple spots will be there!)

I haven't had stains in the toilet at all in a long time and I've been using Canasa nightly. I wonder why?

I've also experienced this annoying and frustrating "side effect" of 5ASA. I've come to the conclusion that the water in the bowl must play a part. At home (larger city), in hours, there is speckling! yet I tend to spend 1-2 months with family in the summer (in a small town, in another province) and NO purple speckles... perhaps hard vs soft water or something different cities use in their water???
