So today I met with the surgeon for my J pouch surgery, set up all the appointments. bloodwork and surgery registration on the 15th step 1 jpouch surgery on the 19th. I definitely wanted laparoscopic surgery and he looked at me and it came out of his mouth before I could even ask about it so that made me very happy. He said that at my age(24) i should bouce back very quickly. step 1, 6-7 weeks of ostomy bag while my rectum heals up, then step 2. Just wish I'd known this was going to be the outcome 5 years ago when i was originally diagnosed.

Keep me posted on everything will you?! I'm 26 and freshly diagnosed. I'd love to hear your experience as you go through and come out of surgery!

I will be meeting with my surgeon on the 20th. I have been struggling with severe UC for almost two years now. I was diagnosed when I was 27 and now currently on my third round of steroids, plus Remicade, 6MP, etc. I have never truly gotten into remission. Hoping the jpouch surgery will work for me. I will be thinking and praying for you on the 19th. Good Luck! Keep us posted.

good luck with the surgery. Here's to a UC free life! May even go that way myself if this condition worsens over the yearrs!

I'm on remicade and have to go off because it isn't healing me and I can either try humira a trial drug or surgery. I'm scared of the surgery but I've been in a flare since I was diagnosed in March 2009 I had symptoms for a year before this. I wonder how long the strong medication will really buy me. I'm going to talk to a surgeon before I decide the trial drug scares me I might try humira.

Good Luck and keep us posted alot of us are near surgery and like to hear how it goes. Think in a less than a month you will be uc free! yes tongue

Brad, my son Dillon had his J pouch built last January and his reversal the end of Feb. He has pretty much forgotten what life with UC was like and is living life exactly the way a teenager should. You are so much healthier going into this surgery. It will be much easier than the last.

Im having it done at Princeton Baptist in Birmingham. The surgeon Dr. Parker works at a few different hospitals so I got to choose between there or St. Vincents I forgot the others. Since my GI dr. works out of Princeton I figured it'd be best to have it there, I'd already be in their system and sending medical files would be easiest that way.

One other thing I was worried about was that I'd been on prednisone since I was diagnosed back in 05 constantly. back in August I completely came off prednisone for the first time and I've lost almost 20 pounds. Dr. Parker said that if I needed to go back on prednisone up untill surgery that would be fine even up to 20mg. I may as bad as I dont want to, but my BMs have become way too frequent since August I'd say the number has tripled. Its kinda crazy that even when I was on 1mg I seemed to be pretty well and that drop to none set me off.

One other thing that moved things along was that Dr. Parker knew my GI so he trusted all the tests and things that my GI had done and didnt have to run his own biopsies/tests to rule out crohn's and other GI problems.
