A bit of an intro: Well after getting better very quickly since my dx in July, in late August I began to flare again. It only got worse and a 2 weeks ago I went to the ER because I couldn't take it anymore. They dx me with pneumonia and put me on a z pak as well as prednisone @ 40mg daily.

I have been off of the z pak for a week now and things haven't seen to get that much better. I am not having D all day long anymore, but I am not exactly progressing towards a 'normal'.

I take all my meds in the morning with breakfast. Everything is usually good throughout the day but once night time comes or in the morning it seems as if I am not even taking any meds. The GI says that I am supposed to keep on the 40mg daily until I am having normal BMs.

I was wanting to know what any of your experiences have been with using prednisone to get out of a flare.

I was on 40mg for a week and decrease to 30mg a week and so fourth. I do think it is important to wait to decrease your dose until you're feeling "normal". I have rushed when I got below 10/20mg and ended up flaring again. Better off staying at a higher dose and nipping it in the bud, if possible, hopefully you can get off the first time instead of experiencing relapses.

Two weeks at 40mg should have things healing up. Maybe you will feel comfortable decreasing in a few days. You can always decrease in 5mg instead of 10mg increments, that helps some of us. Of course follow the advice of your GI. It's extremely important that you have good communication with your doctor so he can guide you.

Hi, I was on 50mg prednisone after I got out of hospital, and was on it for 2months. The doctor then reduced it to 40mg, and the bleeding returned! So am still on 40mg 2weeks later, hoping to taper slowly since much less bleeding. So, I would advice to taper down slowly, and hopefully the symptoms wont return. Good Luck!

i have been on 60 mg prednisone for the past three weeks after hptl stay- starting to taper by 5 mgs at ten day intervals-i dont like the SLOW taper because cant sleep,nervous energy and munchies.i guess it is controling my flare- i still have five or six soft bm daily. this is my first time at high dosage of pred-how long does it take for the narcotic effect to start waring off? good luck endro you are young and maybe they will find a cure for this uc before too long.

I guess what I was really asking was how long should it take for the prednisone to start really controlling the UC. For me it just seems like it is limiting the number of bm I have. GI says I am supposed to be on the 40 until it gets all better, then taper.
The only real side effect I have noticed is the munchies.
