Zen Mom, the colonoscopy is not as bad as you fear. The prep is certainly no worse than you've already been through, with diarrhea several times a day. My personal experience has been negative only because (1) I get too dehydrated (DRINK DRINK DRINK!) and (2) the last scope put me INTO a flare. Also the anesthesia makes me really nauseated, but that is not the scope's fault. I believe that the scope will show changes in the mucosa of the colon even if you are not currently flaring.
about diet - sorry about the prediabetes thing. Changing your diet is hard, and sometimes it seems like the best plan for IBD is not a "healthy" plan. I'm talking about low residue foods (like processed flours, simple sugars) being recommended for IBD, whereas "healthier" whole grains and raw vegetables and fruit make a lot of IBDers very miserable. But not all are like that - mostly you have to do a lot of trial and error to see how you feel. After 10 years of this disease (Crohn's, first diagnosed as UC proctitis) I can tell you that I feel really good when I fast (which is pretty typical, although not really all that helpful as we all need calories to live), and pretty good when I'm eating high protein and low carb (which is not great for me since I really don't like meat that much). Fruit doesn't seem to bother me, and I do love a good salad, but it turns out I don't eat that so much anymore. Not a conscious choice, but there you go.
There are a few people who use diets like the Maker's Diet, or Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which they report works really well (and also result in restricted calories, at least at the beginning).
Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.
