hi i was told i had colitis about 3 yrs ago now and was taking pentasa tablets and salofolk enemas which did not work i only ever had it under control 2 times, but when i went to hospital the other day for some more colonoscopy and biopsy results he told me that its pointing more towards chrones thats causing it,, he s...aid thats some tests i had done bak in 2004 indicated also towards chrones but i was never even told about this in 2004 i was told i was fine, cause in 2004 i had a camera for a spot of bleedin but it stoppped,, they told me i was fine, which i now know is a lie, now they have put me on prednisolone steroids for 6 weeks and still to take my pentasa tablets,,, what side effects am i likely to get do u think? and i really hope they work,, i was not quite sure whether the doctor was telling me i have just chrones or that i have chrones which is making me also have colitis he was not clear

There is a condition called Crohn's colitis. This is still Crohn's but it is in the large intestine for now. It also has the potential of going thru the mucousal layer, possibly preforation unlike with Uc which mainly attacks only the mucousal layer. Either way, they are both basically treated the same way; same meds. I think you will probably see more side effects from the pred then from the Pentasa. What dose of pred did he put you on? With the Pentasa, you might get headaches and minor hair loss in the beginning but if your body gets used to it, the side effects should go away.

i am on 6 tablets a day each 5mg for the first week so that 30mg?, then down to 5 a dayfor the second week, 4 for the 3 week etc till i get to the 6th week and thats all i have to take of the pred ,, thanks for the info

hi on my 5th day of the prednisolone and i m still bleeding quite bad, should they have started to work by now or am i been to eager?

If you are supposed to start tapering down, call your GI and tell him/her that you are still bleeding badly. He/she may up the dose or keep you at the higher dose a bit longer until the bleeding slows down.
