how much vsl#3 DS to take and can i mix in applesauce?

I am waiting for my vsl#3 DS to arrive via mail order pharmacy. 

Currently I am taking primodphilus reuteri , 2 pills a day, which is 10 billion.

The vsl ds is 900 billion! I plan to take a 1/4 packet a day, and maybe move up to a 1/2 a packet.  Do you think this should be effective?

also, ive tried this stuff in water before and it was disgusting.

can i mix it in applesauce? will it work as well? does it still taste disgusting?

Yes I have red of many that mix it with juice, but the normal VSL#3. But I imagine that DS stands for double dose...it is not availablen here in Italy..:-)
why do you plan to start on 1/4 packet?

yes ds stands for double dose . regular vsl has 450 billion bacteria

I plan to start on 1/4 a packet because currently I am on only 10 billion bacteria a day.  a quarter packet would be 225 billion a day! figured i would start slow.  i read that starting this probiotic makes some gassy, bloated, etc.  plus, i figure that 225-450 billion bacteria a day should be enough??

I started right away with two packs a day, I was not on probiotics before, I only had bloated tummy and slight pain on third day

I went right from one packet of regular VSL to one VSL DS a day.
Applesauce is a great mivxer, or yogurt... I've put it on ice cream, but that's a bit weird.... mixed it in orange juice, cranberry juice, and chocolate milk!

I take 8 packs a day, It makes me 95% good. Thou Im not on any other medication. This is according to vsl#3 webpage.


Theagremling www.vsl3.it there are also uk and dutch sites where you can order online. VSL#3 is for the european market is made in italy.

I've never had a problem with it and after so many years I guess I have just gotten use to the taste and just chug it down in water.

One pack should be good.

And applesauce is fine. In fact I prefer it to liquids as the consistancy is better.

You're going to get a lot of different recommendations and each is correct in its own way. One of the reasons that probiotics are not used more and often looked down by the medical community is that it is hard to delineate a specific dosage that is to be effective. Sometimes it is not the number of bacteria, but rather the strain or species of bacteria...and everyone's GI tract contains a unique combination and may respond differently. You may want to start slow with 1/4 to 1/2 sachet and see how you respond and increase it as needed. It is generally recommended to take more in times of a flare and less when you are in remission. I take about 1 sachet a day, divided into 2 doses with yogurt as a maintenance dose to keep me in remission.
