Has anyone had a small bowel GI series(Barium)

Yes, I have. I imagine they know you have UC already. I'd try to limit the medications, just what you need. Lots of people say the Barium stops them up, but I did have to have a BM and it was very urgent, but it wasn't until I got out of the hospital and to the music store. Maybe take a change of underwear. Just remember, it's either drinking it, or getting an enema of it... which will make you poop faster? lol jk.

But yeah I'd just relax, they'll understand. And find out where the bathroom is of course. And warn them you're afraid you might have to go run to the bathroom. Is it just the... what's it called... you lay on the thing and get the IV? Is that what you're doing?

my son had a small bowel barrium xrays and this is how it went:
drink the stuff, wait a while, take an xray, wait a while, take an xray, wait a while, take an xray... for most of the day.
he did have to poop while there but i couldn't tell you if it was any more urgent or not because he was still in diapers at the time.
it could only be useful to have say a bag with some extra clothes and reading material or something else to pass the time.

Yep, I did the barium series before being diagnosed by c-scope. It doesn't involve an IV-- just drinking the fluid & waiting for it to disperse thru the small intestine so that the radiologist can take the x-rays in each section of the organ. (Sounds like E.P. had dye added-- that may have been for scanning.) There is a wide range of time allotted for dispersal of the barium-- because people have varying transit thru the intestines-- so, in case yours takes a while to get to the ileum, the staff will tell you to rest or read between x-ray sessions. I was finished in 90 minutes, but some people need 3-4 hours to get it done. I was also worried beforehand about having to expel the barium, but it was very neutral-tasting & room temperature so it did not bother my gut at all, TG. Do ask right away where the nearest john is, and tell the radiologist or technician that you feel worried about having to expel stuff-- chances are they will know how to reassure you. FYI, those flouroscopy rooms (as they are called) where they do the small bowel series almost ALWAYS have an attached bathroom for that purpose. I have yet to see one without a bathroom. How long they take depend on your bowel transit time, as others have mentioned. Basically, we are waiting for the contrast to go from your stomach through until your terminal ileum (the end of the small bowel). At that point, it is usually the radiologist who comes in to take some extra pictures while looking at your bowel. If you need to use the bathroom, I can't imagine it being a problem. . There are tons of websites out there that explain the procedure if you want to get a general idea. Hope it goes all well for you.

I did it too, but it was during the diagnosing process. It sucked. I cried through the whole thing. I was 15 at the time though.
I think EP probably had what I did. The upper GI series and a ct scan at the same time. For the ct scan they inject you with iodine.

Luv2ride, I'll take a McDonald's strawberry shake any day over one of those barium "shakes". Ewww. I think pink chalk tastes better.
