So ive had UC for about 9 months all together but i was finally diagnosed in October 2010. Since then my symptoms usually go up and down. In the begenning i went to the bathroom 20 times a day, always diarrhea and blood and mucous. It was disgusting. Since i have been on my medication, my bm's went down to about 6x a day. Anyways, last week was awful i was going to the bathroom 10x a day, lots of blood, what ever i put in my mouth it was out the other end within minutes. It got so bad to the point where i couldnt make it to the bathroom and ended up having an accident. AND THEN all of a sudden for about 3 days now, i barely have gone to the bathroom, i dont have any urgencies and no blood. I go to the bathroom once a day now, maybe. I just dont understand how it can go from being like hell to decent all of a sudden? Is my UC playing tricks on me or something and is going to come back with a vengance? Has anyone else experienced this?

Maybe it is blind, stupid luck. But you may now be entering a remission and I am happy for you. You may want to examine your diet for the past few days. There is a small chance that you are sensitive to certain foods that triggered your flare. The usual suspects are gluten and dairy. I am sensitive to plums and shellfish among other things, but I only noticed these when other members began complaining about them and I noticed a connection with my flares.

Depends...what meds are you on?

The first year or two are really the most difficult to get meds to kick in and consistency regarding dosaging, maintenance, etc.

You are obviously flaring, and when flaring, it can go up and down a bit.

Just for your information, food taken in does NOT go out the other end in minutes. It's physically impossible.

ARe you female? sometimes it can do up and down with periods or hormonal fluctuations.

Are you under extreme stress...such as at school?

Im really sensitive to dairy, the only think i can think of eating that was dairy was the tiniest bit of sour cream i put into crepes i was making, and i had one crepe. Also if i have a sip of coffee im pretty much done for the week lol. Otherwise my diet has been pretty much the same unless im forgetting something. Hopefully im entering remission, it would be fantastic. Thanks for the reply!

Currently im taking Salofalk, im on 8 pills a day. I also know that food doesent come out the other end in minutes, i was exagerating lol. And yes im a female, and i have noticed that when my period comes around my symptoms tend to be worse, im also on birth control, do you think that has an affect?
The stress part may have an impact due to the fact that i was in a pretty bad car accident a while ago and im still going through alot of things because of it (surgery and rehabilitation) but i dont know if that can really impact me that much?

Hi..oh yeah, it can definitely have a huge impact. Healing from that type of trauma, beit emotional or physical or both....

You do, however need to get on those rectal meds...stress to the doc that with all you're going through the very least you can do is help your butt be happier. Get lots of refills.

Dairy, defintely can cause some discomfort, diarrhea, gas, etc...if you're lactose intolerant, try to stay away from it. You might have a limit...if you go over, then you'll probably have symptoms.

Periods...definitely, be it on the pill or not. The hormone fluctuation seems to be the problem. You might consider the 4 periods a year pill.

You're flaring and you don't have your symptoms dealt with yet. Your colon will rush anything through and you'll bleed if your inflammation is to that point. Try not to make it all about food...your issues are more complex than focussing on just that.

Yes, food will give you symptoms. People who don't have UC have symptoms...if you know something will give you discomfort, stay away from it when you're having a more active day. If you want to eat whatever, the ifyou'll be at home, go for it. I ate for comfort during flares, and chose when to eat stuff...mostly at night for the things that I knew would bother me later in the day. Extra gas on a flaring rectum = minimal control...

Rectal meds...can't stress that enough...and I'm sure somewhere you told me why you aren't on them. Can you put that in your siggie so I don't pester you about it..lol.

Yes i was on rectal meds, that was actually the first kind of medication i was on but the reason i stopped was because i couldnt keep any of it in, i had extreme difficulty with it.I was on the Salofalk Enema 2x a day, once in the morning and once at night. As soon as i would put the enema in i would need t rush to the bathroom, no matter how hard i would try and hold it in. Also when i would hold it in it would become painful and it would eventually come out on its own. So now im pretty much stuck with pills i think.

there are also suppositories...that might heal enough to help keep in the enemas.

they are much better than nothing

I have pretty much an overnight change & poof the 20+ times a day stopped...bit of a taper, like down to 3, then 2 then 1, but it went pretty fast. The only medication I was on was lialda, but I responded right away..I get the food coming right out the other end, when I was in the hosp, I promised them, you give me a cracker, I'll give you a stool sample..happened within minutes.

food still doesn't come right out the other end...but it can certainly trigger one.
Unless your butthole is connected to your mouth, it doesn't happen.
