Hello everyone, this is my first post. I have read these forums a lot before, and thought I'd post some info which really helped me over the last 15 months.
I was diagnosed with UC over 5 years ago, and never really achieved remission - that is until I started using this diet 15 months ago.
I was on various medications for over four years, and nothing really worked. At one point the only medication which made a difference was Prednisolone. The oral dose which I was on was ratcheted up so high that eventually I had to stop taking it orally and take it more directly as an enema called Predfoam. Around that time, I also started taking azathioprine but that in itself did not seem to make a lot of difference. Predfoam, on the other hand, worked in that it kept things under control but it did not induce remission.
Some of you may remember that Predfoam became scarce in the UK last year, and I was eventually unable to get hold of any. I was in a really terrible state, and tried various other enemas and suppositories but nothing seemed to work for me. Eventually, I was put on a different enema called Budenofalk (Budesonide). Budenofalk worked remarkably well, so well in fact that within three weeks I was better than I have ever been on any of the previous medications.
As you can imagine, I started to ask myself a lot of questions, like: why wasn't I put on Budenofalk sooner? And more importantly, what is so special about
Budenofalk that makes it so effective for me? I scoured the web for all the information that I could find about
Budenofalk, about
its active ingredient (Budesonide), about
the relationship between UC and asthma, and so on.
My search eventually helped me build up a picture of how UC was operating in my body, and everything suddenly started to fall into place in my mind. It also lead me to find out about
a diet, which was recommended as a result of a scientific study.
I would really recommend anyone who has UC to look up this diet and try it out.
Here is the link:

This diet is not really a diet as such but more like a recommended list of foods to eat and others to avoid. The following link (word document) gives the list of foods in more detail, with the most beneficial at the top, and the most harmful at the bottom:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC549081/bin/1475-2891-4-7-S3.docThe best thing I liked about
this diet is that it was constructed based on scientific evidence. They had volunteers record what they have eaten, and made them undergo regular sigmoidoscopy examinations to assess the condition of their colon.
I have been on this diet now for 15 months. It has really worked for me and turned things around in a way which I never thought possible. I know each person's UC is slightly different and what works for one person may not work for another. Nevertheless, I would recommend to anyone who is suffering and finding that their medication is barely keeping on top of their symptoms to try to do the following:
1- Keep taking the medication you are currently on, you have nothing to lose. It is not a case of either/or. You can keep taking your medication and also do the Magee et al diet.
2- Ask your doctor if you could try using Budenofalk. Six weeks of Budenofalk could bring a flare-up under control better than anything else you have been put on so far.
3- Regardless of how good or bad your current condition is and what medication you are on, do the Magee et al diet and stick to it. It could make all the difference, and it will keep your colon in good condition.
