My gastro, who subspecializes in IBD treatment & has ca. 30 yrs experience in the field, commented in one of the professional journals a couple yrs ago that, considering the instance of pouchitis & other recurrent post-surgery conditions affecting some UCers, it may be UNFAIR to call colectomy the cure for UC. Meaning: it's not a guarantee of return/restoration to perfect health. Take the example of members here posting after surgery about stoma retraction-- was their surgery a cure? I think it's dangerous to state definitively that surgery is a cure for UC because the public then dismisses our ailment as not life-threatening, so-- not very worthy of funding for further medical research. (And YES-- I also sign on here intending to help UCers get thru stuff I've already experienced, like bad reactions to meds.) / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
I think that's a very good point you made. Yes, technically you don't have UC anymore when the colon is out. Does that mean your life is great? Maybe, maybe. The attitude of "well your colon is out so now you're cured" does not help those of that go on to have severe complications and issues after surgery. UC isn't considered disabling because there's a "cure". UC isn't considered that big a deal because there's a "cure". Well, so glad I'm "cured"
