Anyone have increased bleeding from using Canansa or Salofalk?

Used a Salofalk suppository for the first time and next morning I had lots more bleeding than I had been having, kind of afraid to use it again, or this just a passing side effect?

Sounds normal to me...one suppository isn't going to create any increased problems.

It could be perception rather than an actual issue....meaning you might see the blood more mixed with the suppository.

If after a week or two you have no improvement or are increasing in intensity, you may not be on enough rectal med dosage or you're sensitive to the product.

You can use them up to 3 times a day.

What oral meds are you on?

Hi Q,

well I've been on Lialda samples the doctors office gave me to try and the Solafalk are of 1 gr dosage.
There is no doubt the blood did increase by quite a bit the one time I tried the suppository, but it could been coincidence.
I just wonder if I anyone else had a negative reaction to it or if this sometimes happens with starting suppositories.

I have a really negative reaction to Canasa, I can use cortenemas with no issues though.


I have tried Canasa several times and it has always made my symptoms worse.

Well, I was unfortunate enough to have increased bleeding from 5ASA medications. In my case Pentasa(both oral and as a suppository) gave me increased bleeding. I tried both products for just over a week each, and both products increased my bleeding significantly. Would have loved if they had worked, but I'm guessing my allergy/intolerance to aspirin didn't help my body want to accept this medication. I didn't know there was a link between aspirin and 5ASA medication, until I had this problem and checked it out. Not knocking the product though, because if it works, it really works(as you're probably already aware) and people can stay in remission for years........if only that had worked out for me.

well, I do hope you don't just stop at one. My flares got worse before they got better...even with the 5ASA, initially.

Thanks for the reply's, I may give it another try or so and see what happens. I wish it would work especially for the $80 it cost. I don't have a problem with aspirin at all so that isn't it.
One other thing I thought of is Lialda seems to make my stools less formed than when I didn't take it, my bathroom trips seem less, but when I go tends to be loser. Don't know if that is good or bad thing.

Hey, sorry for the long delay. Post surgery pain/problems....

I had tried sulfasalazine too Quincy. That also had the side effect of making my insides want to find their way out of my body(not vomiting just like it wanted to explode but couldn't)...so that didn't work out too well. Same problem as the Pentasa as in not working right though. The only thing that gave some temporary relief was the Prednisone....but it did bad things to my head so I couldn't continue it anyway at that stage. Anyway, main point is 5ASA's are linked to Aspirin, and I was allergic to aspirin already so that's why I couldn't tolerate 5ASA I guess. After doing some basic research, it actually states patients allergic to aspirin shouldn't be given 5ASA medication in the first place, but maybe it's not well known, since I was.

By the way Quincy, I use to read these boards a lot(not quite as much lately) and really respect what you do here, so don't take my post the wrong way. Just wanted to comment back, but haven't had a chance until now. :-) Ad

Doctors should ask if patients are allergic to aspirin. The 5ASA meds are in the family of salicylates.

I personally believe that many doctors start patients up with too high an oral dosage and don't prescribe rectals...if things don't improve, it's that the meds don't work or that one is getting worse. There's truth, but many times a different one. Some 5ASA meds don't agree, but others do...

One suppository shouldn't make a decision, sorry....

Regarding Lialda...it's a high dosage all at once...the dosage can be split to two.

Yes, some cannot take the meds...plain and simple.
But some don't want to take any meds, and I believe that if they see any change to the contray it's bad and quit before waiting long enough to see if things improve or tweaking the meds a bit to have it possibly working better for them.

Pred..great it works for you...I'll avoid it forever if I can. you can also consider the steroid rectals and depending on where your UC is...maybe the entocort. I believe there's supposed to be another oral topical steroid with a better deliver system to sustain further into the colon with lower dosage and hopefully less side effects.

I wish I had of actually joined earlier. As soon as I was diagnosed with UC I read this board heaps. I've since had the surgeries to get a jpouch. The temp end ileo was great(after I got my head around it, and got over the fact i'd lost my colon-but it did give me my health back), but the most recent jpouch surgery has not gone well. I've written about it in another thread.

I've also just found out i'm allergic to cipro. I have known for the last 4 years I was allergic to flagyl, but had never tried cipro until after jpouch surgery. Who knows how they will treat pouchitis now if it becomes chronic....I'm fine with Penicillin based antibiotics but you're supposed to have a mix to be effective. Allergies getting in the way again...And they treat cuffitis with 5ASA's...woops problem again.

Yeah, I don't actually like Pred either, even if it did stop the bleeding that first and only time. I didn't fancy the outcome of being on them long term at all. I already have some degenerative spine, so I didn't need pred speeding that up for me.

Zippy - Lialda did help me for several years but I also noticed that my stools never firmed up completely while on it. Even when other symptoms decreased the soft stool remained as did some cramping with a BM. I believe it was the Lialda. It was worth it though when it was helping me. Apriso seemed to make my bleeding worse. Oral ASA's can do that sometimes...

Canasa has also helped me sometimes and not other times...when I was VERY inflammed in the rectal area Canasa actually seemed to irritate the tissue more than help for me. It caused more bleeding too. Although I have used it other times with some sucess...it is just hit and miss for me sometimes. When I have quite a bit of bleeding from the rectal area foam enemas work the best for me...might give it a try.

I had the same problem 2 days back. The rectum was severely inflamated and when I put in Canasa the pain was so bad I thought I was going to pass out. Actually I wish I did. Took an hour before Vicodin kicked in and I dozed off. I was so scared yesterday I stayed away from Canasa. I have put one in today and so far it's not too bad.

I'm having the exact same problem and I doubt it's a coincidence. 

Five days ago I used the 1st one and had markedly more bleeding the next morning.  I got very nervous and waited 5 days and my symptoms returned to what they had been before the Canasa.

I thought it might be a coincidence so I tried another last night.  Well,  this morning the bleeding was much worse again.  I am not allegic to aspirin.  I'd really like to know if this is common at first. I've used these many times in the past with no worsening of symptoms but I think they were a lower dosage since (pink instead of blue?)

Has anyone spoken to their Dr about this? TIA
