what prep?

If you're bleeding, blood will still come out if you have the urge to go after the clean-out.  It'll just be no stool coming out.

No other way...you'll be fine, enjoy the drugs!
Maybe you should stay awake with a twilight dosage and watch the monitor...I do and it's certainly worth the prep the night before.

Yeah, the prep totally sucks. I've never done the miralax...only the gallon preps (except once I did the fleet oral sodium phosphate. That was the worst 3 days in my life...it even ruined the after c-scope breakfast..ugh.

Once your bowel is cleaned out, you might have a bit of stuff coming out, but not diarrhea like in a flare where there's stool being produced. It'll be more digestive juices, etc. I was flaring when I had my first c-scope and bleeding too...I was weak the next morning, but not bad with the diarrhea during the night. Actually it was a bit of a break.

Please ask/beg your doctor for rectal retention enemas. If you're in the US, that would be Rowasa.

The Asacol won't be enough anyway because the rectum will be inflamed and the asacol doesn't reach there. Have you improved at all??

The drugs are a good thing...I got only valium shot the first time. It did hurt with the air being pumped into the colon for the scope, but it was OK. I tried to relax as best I could...and I think it helped.

I , too, was deathly afraid of any doc to look up my butt, but I welcomed it after suffering so badly with the bloody diarrhea. A diagnosis to me is a relief...then I deal with it in the way needed. A good doctor helps..and I do love mine even after 22 years.

Hang tough, just imagine that we all have gone through the same thing and truly know what you're going through. Do have lots of toilet paper and wet it maybe with water and lotion to help ease the sting. I like Cetaphil cleansing lotion..it's actually soothing. Afterward, a good hand shower, steroid cream and I'm good for bed.

I have a colonoscopy coming up in about 2 weeks. Definitely not looking forward to the bowel prep...

My GI advises me that a colonoscopy is not necessary because I am not having any severe symptoms (and that I had a colonoscopy just over a month ago) but I am still going for it anyway just to make sure everything is ok.

I've had numerous scopes and the prep only makes my symptoms worse temporarily.

thanks quincy. yer my GI said that too, but since (as you know) I am going to China for a year (perhaps more), it will be hard to arrange a colonoscopy so I thought it would be best to have another one before leaving to be certain of my UC status. what do you think?

Hi! Soooo, bombs Away! Its just now 4pm (where I am) and I just took the Ducolax laxatives..in 2 hrs I am so fortunate as to drink 32oz of Gatorade mixed with the Miralax...

I do appreciate all the support, I dont feel nearly as weirded out. Just dread and have resigned myself to "jest git er done!"

Max, if you can wait, WAIT. Its not worth the extra pain/agony/D and anxiety.

I know there are kidney risks associated with it but there is also Osmoprep which is just a bunch of pills you take with water. I've used it for my last two scopes

max..what you could do is ask the doc for a sig-scope. It'll go past the sigmoid and some say almost up to the transverse. That's better than an entire c-scope.

Are you on any antispasmodics?

And on the enemas? steroid? nightly? or only supps...dang, you need a signature. I best write some of this down because I never remember exactly.


I DO hope you'll have internet access when you get to china.

With all the stress you have, it's very possible your inflammation will take its time. Do you not have any foam mesalamine enemas available in oz? how many supps are you taking?

hi quincy. Yer sorry about my signature... not sure how to create one :(... so computer illiterate.

As for the meds:

- Mesalazine supps 2 times daily
- Nightly Salofalk enemas

I am temporarily stopping the Salofalk oral granules (1.5g sachets, twice daily) that I had started earlier because I had been taking the granules for 3 weeks and EVERY SINGLE week, there would be one BM in which after emptying my bowels the toilet water would be a blackish/reddish colour. The stool itself would be brown, but the water would be dark black/red. However this would only happen for one BM every week... all the other BMs would be normal. Before starting Salofalk granules I never experienced anything like this. It is strange because I can't trace the colour to anything in my diet (did not eat any blueberries etc. the night before). Further, when starting the Salofalk granules, I did not experince any other negative symptoms (such as increase in BMs, abdominal pain (other than what was already occurring) etc.) Therefore, I've stopped the granules and want to wait for about 2 weeks to see if the dark black water occurs again. This 3rd colonoscopy is on the 10th of Jan so I will ask the GI for a new type of oral med IF the Salofalk is causing the black/red water. Any suggestions on oral meds?

As for the colonoscopy, I wanted to do a full colonoscopy instead of a sigmoidoscopy because I know there is slight inflammation on the cecum and I wanted to check how that is going. Is there any particular reason you are advising against a colonoscopy? I am aware of the perferation risk etc. but is there anything else I should be concerned of? (having had a colonoscopy about 4 weeks ago).
