Going through uveitis right now....has anyone else? Need your suggestions...

It's happened again with uveitis, now it's my left eye, early in 2009 it was my right eye. Most of the action in the left eye, left corner, bright red blood last night, today, not bad not as bright as last night, but a tinge of red close to the color of my eye. I find that this must have happened because I over strained my eyes. I was plucking my eyebrows last night using a little mirror and I think because that' how it happened? And I was drinking about 3 to 4 cups of coffee yesterday and was eating a lot of spaghetti with sauce, probably the sauce too?

I'm not quite how this works and what I should be doing?
I'm not in any pain right now, but just a bit of an ache nothing that I need any pain relief or anything.

My optometrist gave me some drops before for dry eyes, I guess I should use them again? One is called GenTeal lubricant eye drops for nighttime and then for during the day another called Systane for general eye dryness.

Your experience with this would really help me right now, guys!

Uveitis can be one of the side effects of IBD along with kidney stones, liver problems, and crippling arthritis. I suffered the arthritis and serious eye inflammation during my last flare but those symptoms quickly disappeared when the flare ended.

If you are gluten intolerant then it is possible that eating all that spaghetti may have aggravated your condition. Try going gluten free for a few days and see if it helps. Otherwise I would try to get out of your flare as quickly as possible.

Are you sure it's uvietis?  Uvietis is rather painful and usually the whole eye is red and on fire.  Your optometrist is treating you for dry eyes not uvietis.  Genteal is good at night because it's thicker than most preparations for eye lubrication and systane is one of the best ones for every day use that's on the market.  There is treatment if one has truly has uvietis.  That would entail the use of steroids or methotrexate, etc...  It sounds like you just burst a blood vessel which is rather common and usually it will repair itself without any intervention.  Sensitivity to light is a common manifestation of dry eys syndrome.  Happy New Year.

Not sure what it is. Last opt. appt said iritis. I thought it's pretty much the same thing. Yes, it looks like a burst blood vessel, in the left corner of my left eye. Keep a cool cloth on my eyes last night this morning, the bloodshot was not so much but a little tiny tinge brighter red close to my eye color.

Didn't know this was part of a normal thing to happen with UC'ers.

Actually it was my left eye last time not my right eye.
Happy New to you as well! May they find better treatment for UC this year!

Believe me you don't want uvietis.  If you really had any good optomotrist would send you to an opthamologist for treatment stat.  Your burst blood vessel has nothing to do with your uc in all likely hood.  Many non uc people get them and it's quite common.  It will resolve in about 3-4 days completely.  If your eyes hurt and your sensitive to light like me it's probably just dry, also coincidental or not.  Again many people who don't have uc get this.  Anyways relax and let's hope a cure for uc comes along.

Uveitis/iritis is a very serious thing!  It can cause blindness if left untreated.  I've been getting it for years and they treat it with steroid eye drops like pred forte (prednisolone).  You should verify with your eye doctor what they think it is.  Hopefully you are seeing an opthamologist, but if they are not treating this correctly I would recommend you change doctors.  It is not something external with your eye, it is inflammation in the eye.  It is an extramanifestation of ibd.  Pain, sensitivity to light, redness, blurred vision are some of the symptoms I have gotten with this.  And it will occur in either eye.  It was a big factor in my getting my cd diagnosis, when it just wouldn't respond to treatment.  I actually got the iritis many years before my cd symptoms.  Good luck!

I will admit my eye problems started this summer also, with blurred vision also and there is sensitivity to light also. And of course, the floaters and the lights flashing at the corner of my eyes that happened as well. That's why I'm not sure exactly what is should be. The opt said iritis, so I will get checked again for a proper diagnosis. The dark red, looks like a burst blood vessel especially last night is only in my left eye.

Once again I can relate to what someone is going through I this board. I began to have bloodshot eyes just this last year and also had an episode of flashing zig zag floaties. This all goes back to inflammation, the doctors will never find anything wrong with your eyes most likely because it is inflammation in your body causing it.
Modern medicine has no answer for our condition besides controlling the inflammation.

I googled for burst blood vessel pictures and that was exactly what it looked like, so yes, MyUC, you were right. That's what it is. Again, I checked it is caused by dry eyes, I had a rough couple of days, stayed up til late and at work at the computer and a walk in the cold dry air probably all led up to this happening.

But I will check at opt for prevention and maintenance.

Your welcome.  I just wanted to make my position clear.  I believe that UC can definitely cause eye issues, that to me is fact.  It's just that uvietis is very easy to spot by any reasonably trained optometrist or opthomalogist pretty quickly.  I too developed an onslaught of sensitivity to light followed by the developement of floaters and even had few flashing light experiences.  I did have alot of inflammation in my system at the time.  This was evidenced by high wbc due to my colitis.  My eyes started to hurt, so I boned up on eye medicine and made the rounds of eye MDs.  I saw 5-6 eye doctors and like one of the previous poster had said no eye doctor could find anything wrong with my eyes other than I had developed dry eyes.  Uvietis is very serious but can usually be spotted by a trained professional rather quickly.  In the end I just wanted to say I don't take what you are going through lightly at all, you should seek out another opinion just to make sure.  I see both an optometrist and opthamologist each 6 month apart just to stay on top of the eyes because I love them so. 

Again it sounds like you are on the right track now.  Good luck with this.

Over the years, I've had uveitis, irisitis, and conjunctivitis and I would have to say that they are all painful....extremely so. So I think if you had this, then you would definitely know. I was just recently diagnosed with Dry Eye Syndrome and right now I use Restasis and it seems to work really well. But it took quite a few years to finally be diagnosed with it. I would go to my primary and then an optometrist but it wasn't until I seen an Ophthalmologist that I got my diagnosis. Before Restasis, I was on almost every single dry eye drop there was and none seemed to work for long or that well. I still have occasional issues with symptoms but for the most part it is controlled now.

My symptoms of Dry Eye is: red, watery and itchy eyes, blurriness, floaters and sometimes mild pain.

My son has Uveitis, We are have tried several medications with no avail of making into a successful remission. We have begun just this evening Humira. I hope this works. Some people are suggesting pain - he does not have any pain in his eyes, but he can get pretty light sensitive. And of course the medications he is often on are auto immune suppressives. His Auto immune posterior Uveitis doesn't seem to want to clear up. Has anyone else been on or used Humira for this?

Newbie here.

I have been diagnosed with UC for 16 years. Early on, I had frequent episodes of one red eye (my right), eye soreness in the same eye, and some light sensitivity, which would come and go. My Opthamalogist at the time kind of blew me off. Well, since 2010 I have had three retinal surgeries on that eye, plus two procedures on my other eye. I think these surgeries might have been avoided had I properly addressed the problem in the late 90's properly with a qualified and experienced eye specialist. My opinion, based on my experience, is that if one is seeing floaters and flashes of light, go see a retinal specialist/surgeon as soon as possible. Some Opthamologists/Optometrists do not have experience in this area.

Wow. Sorry you all have had it that rough with this eye inflammation. I've had uveitis - and some pretty tough episodes even - but it has ALWAYS gotten under control with prednisolone eye drops and some eye moisturizer (prescribed by docs along with the pred because the pred can apparently be drying). Even when I started losing vision in my eye because of this (couldn't see as far or as well and things were all blurry), it sorted out within weeks after finishing up the pred. Scared me a lot though. Kept asking the docs for reassurance that my vision wouldn't be permanently messed up. All seemed to be confident it'd come back to normal - and they were right. Whew. Good luck and give pred drops a try, if you haven't already.

I have dealt with it five times or so. If you had iritis, uveitis, they would have prescribed pred drops. Are sure one of the drops wasn't that. If your doc said you had iritis before I think you should go to the eye doc right away to make sure that it's not that. If it is you have to be seen right away, always. If left untreated it can do permanent damage.
