Patient Assistance for Asacol?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to help a friend out here. He is currently using Asacol, but was dropped from his parents insurance. He had finally found a drug that helped him live a normal lifestyle but will be unable to afford it at full cost. Searching around, it seems that Asacol had assistance programs when Proctor and Gamble manufactured it but I have been unable to find a program since Warner Chilcott bought the drug. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or if I just missed a program online.

I believe they closed their patient assistance program. You can get generic asacol from canadian pharmacies for a lot less than name brand costs in the US. just something to consider if you're really having trouble affording the prices here - they are ridiculous without insurance. Another thing to consider is a switch to Lialda or Apriso, they are once a day medications that are similar to asacol and may have active programs.

Several people have posted in the past month about loosing their assistance with Asacol. I switched from Asacol to Lialda last year and it works for me. They also have a patient assistance program. You can just google "Lialda Paitent Assistance Program" and it will come up. That is just one option.

I don't know about Asacol but Lialda has one through Shire. Maybe asking his doc abotu making a switch to Lialda could be an option since both are about the same med?

Hi right now the only assistance for ASACOL that I can find are these:

The Asacol HD Savings Card:

It takes $50 off your copay for those with Prescription insurance.

It takes $50 off the total price for those w/o prescription insurance.

Also this program helps with copay, but I believe it takes off just $20.

I am in the same boat right now.  I believe I have to get onto a different medication because I can't afford $500 a month for regular Asacol, and I certainly can't afford $700 a month for Asacol HD.

I have an Asacol HD savings card and it makes your maximum payment just $50. It doesn't take $50 off the price...you only pay $50.

Sara14, have you tried using that card since January 1? I used to use that card as well, but on January 1 they said they changed their terms and it is now just $50 off.

I have a 3 month prescription that I can no longer use. The date on the prescription is 12/09.

I found this info in another thread.  This gentleman said there is another card program for Asacol HD.  He said to call this number: (800) 899-2330.

funfetti - No, I haven't tried it yet. I read about others running into that problem as well. That totally sucks. However, my insurance from my new job kicked in Jan. 31 so it's no longer an issue for me, except possibly for 1 month since I don't have my insurance card yet and I need a refill in a few days.

I'm very happy for you.  That's a blessing.  BTW you can still use that HD savings card with your new prescription insurance.  It will take $50 off your copay. :)

I called the number that I posted last night.  Basically that number gets you to the Asacol HD savings card program.  They told me the same things I've stated before:

w/o prescription insurance the medication will be lowered by $50

w/ prescription insurance you will receive $50 off your copay.

Thanks, GracieGirl! That's good to know that I can still use it! I did not know that. I may stay on regular Asacol now that I have insurance. That is what I have been on since diagnosis and it works well for me. I was only going to switch because of the assistance program with Asacol HD. I know it's basically the same drug, but I want to stick with what I know works!

What if my co-pay is $20, can I get it for free? I take Asacol 400mg. I wonder if I could switch to 800mg and use this card.

Sara14, I had the Asacol HD card and they had to give me info for a new one with the new terms. You can just call the number on your card :)

notsosicklygirl, if your copay is 20 then yep it should be free!! Lucky!!!! (did you have a deductible to meet? I'm thinking about finding a new insurance plan with better prescription coverage). Does regular Asacol not have a savings card?

I used to be in the Asacol Patient assistance program, that was a great program, they would send a 3 month supply for nothing!! Too bad it's gone.

I do not have a deductible but I am not sure if they will accept me into the program considering I have insurance. The other programs I have been in were not open to people with insurance. The problem is, I spend probably $80 on drugs every month and while it doesn't sound like a lot, it adds up. It is like having another phone bill.

I am going to try to find a card for Asacol 400mg. I will post if I find.

notsosickly - I looked and asked my GI and couldn't find any cards for Asacol 400 mg. Let me know if you find anything.

notsosickly, I don't think it matters if you have prescription insurance or not with regards to being able to get the Asacol HD savings card. Just call their number:
1-866-379-9569



From what I know, the only assistance for ANY Asacol at this time is for the Asacol HD medication (the savings card).

Oh I guess you can call the other number that I posted in the beginning of the thread as well. I called both numbers, and they both got me to the Asacol HD savings card program.
