Hello there,

I am a 19 year old kid who was recently diagnosed with UC. I am having trouble coaping and maybe some of you had had the same exp.

Story.

Starting towards the end of 2010 i started to get diharria many times per day. It wasn't bad or anything untill maybe the start of 2011 where I started to have frequent blood in my stool. I was admitted into the hospital where i started to be naucious and vomit a few times (this happened a few times before too). I had a partial colonoscopy done and my GI later said he is saying i have UC and i will be treated for it.

Right now i have been on an anti-biodic and a steroid for a week. I still have blood in my stool and still go frequently although there are periods where it is better then others. Am i just over reacting or do i have to wait longer for this to kick. Between the hospital giving me meds thru IV and taking at home I have been on them for a combined two weeks. I have a follow up with GI in two days and I am still starting to get naucious after i eat. This is interfearing with school which i have been missing as well as work i just dont know how to get a move on.

Hello and welcome!

What dose of steroids did you start on? Is this your first time on steroids? Usually they start you at 40mg and it works really quick, especially if it's your first time on steroids. Some people it can take quite a few days to help, a week or 2 weeks. Try to be patient. Are you taking Asacol or a oral mesalamine? Have you tried rectal medications?

I believe I am on 40 mg of the steroid and this is my fist time being on one. I feel like its under control when I take both pills togather then just when I take the sterroid at lunch time. These were te meds my GI told me to take after gettin out of the hospital I see him in two days I guess to switch up my meds and I have not taken any other meds besides the anti-biodic 2 times daily and the steroid 3 times daily. The only other med that goes in me is zofran a nausea med just in case I get queezy like I felt last night otherwise I dont even bother to take it.

Howeer when I eat I have this abnormal full feeling like I ate just a bit and I feel like i had a feast. Also on the pills I get cramps a decent amount of the day. This UC is just messing with every aspect of my life.

aww, trust me, we all understand how debilitating a flare up can be. Sometimes doctors don't like to start people on a lot of drugs while they are taking prednisone. I am not sure about splitting the dose but I have heard of other people doing so. I've always taken the full dose in the AM with breakfast. I would imagine it has the same effectiveness split.

Your GI will probably add a mesamaline medication first to see how you do. I do find it odd for them to start you off with steroids and antibiotics instead of going the traditional route (mesalamine oral and rectal). I was in a nasty flare a few years ago and I was able to pull through and into a year+ remission with just Asacol and Canasa suppositories.

What antibiotic are you on? Did you get the results of your biopsies from the colonoscopy and see whether it said UC? usually UC is not treated with antibiotics unless it was infectious and Infectious Colitis is not the same as Ulcerative Colitis. Infectious Colitis could clear up with antibiotics, UC is not curable with medication.

I will check on what meds i am on when i take them later an i will post.. When i went to the hospital i was due for a colinoscopy but was severly nausiated and could not prep. They half preped me I guess in the hospital and all I had done was a sigmoidoscopy (only part of the way in). After the doc was done he said it looks like UC because of all the blood when they got in. I am sure they did a biopsy a week ago but not have heard about any results. Maybe that will come in my follow up friday. Or i supose i can make a call into see what is up with the results. I will list the meds in a bit but i do want to say thanks for talking to me... It helps when someone can relate to the cramps i have and blood/ frequent stools that pass. Hopefully ill get on the right track. All I know from my GI is he eventually wants me off the steroid which i end up finishing today.

Pills are as follows... I am on prednisone 20 mg only and i will be staying on thaf because i have a bunch of pills left and what I will be off after today is my anti-biodic i believe which is called metronidazole or generic for FLAGYL and that is at 250 mg. I usually take one of each in the AM with breakfast the flagyl at lunch time with food then both again at bedtime to get my full doses of 2 prednisone daily and 3 flagyl daily.

Hey there,

Flagyl made me so sick to my stomach when I was on it recently. As soon as I finished that antibiotic, my nausea went away. Perhaps that will bring you some relief when you finish the antibiotic.

I dont know i mean the only time i vomited was last night after being on it for 6 days. My stomach feels weird I guess but well see. Last night i had vomiting so maybe it is from that med i dont know. I guess i will see what comes to be tomorrow. I am still going to the bathroom frequently with blood but i am fighting off cramps that just wont seem to go away.

You hope the FLAGYL resolves it because that would seem to indicate you do not have UC for life.

Went to see my GI today and as well as staying on the prednisone he gave me a supply of lialda to take. Hopefully this will make me better. He said with rest and time I should improve because my UC condition is bad. Anyone ever taken lialda before? Any success? Soon success?

in the top right hand corner of the screen there is a google search bar. you can type in key words like "lialda" and it will pop up topics on this site for that search. that may help. make sure you take and taper your prednisone as directed or you can have bad side effects. hope you're feeling better soon.

I know what lialda is and i split my prednizone like my doc said to. 1 with breakfast and 1 with dinner. Hopefully both will start working soon!!!!
