Does anyone else get depressed on prednisone?

i'm so sorry you are not feeling well and have to be on the dreaded pred. yes, i get VERY depressed on prednisone and don't have energy. the mind wants to do everything, but the body doesn't. it's a very frustrating state to be in. it seems a lot of posters on here are on anti-depressants - i don't know if that is something you might want to look into. maybe talk to your doctor about it. i personally don't take them. i just try to distract myself with something on television or a project, etc. i also have to remind myself that this is temporary...i will eventually be off the prednisone. i'm sure other posters will have some good advice for you. in the mean tiime, i can totally sympathize with you, cause i'm right there with you - you are not alone! i hope you are better soon!

I just tapered down from 60 mg last week to 40, and now am down to 30 mg. Ive been having massive shakes constantly and yes, the depression and weakness are another constant. Not really sure if its just the prednisone, the colitis, the stress, or everything mixed all together but i can certainly sympathize, its a horrible thing to be going through. Im usually a very upbeat and happy person but it all kind of wears on you. I guess we just wait it out and hope for the best :)

Perhaps you are tapering too quickly? The longer you have been on prednisone the smarter it is to taper off very slowly. Jumping off of prednisone 20 or 10mg at a time might just be too much. I am no longer on prednisone but I was on it for almost 5 years non-stop. I've found the most success by tapering off very slowly, 2 1/2 mg every week or two. Hope you feel better soon. Good luck.

I think any steroid can alter one's moods.

Because of a herniated disc a few years back, I was on steroids for a month or so. Doc warned me about the possibility of becoming emotional.

Yes, I had to use Xanax and Lexapro when I was prednisone. I was not right at all. I'm off Lexapro and Xanax now and doing just fine emotionally even though I am still having UC related issues.

Thank you all for your wonderful replies. I couldn't reply for a couple of days. I just wasn't up to it, but I did read the postings every day. Your support was extremely helpful. Energy level is down even more but my spirits are doing better. Walking and working is just about all I can do. Working while on pred. is scary. I am very lucky my family understands and has taken care of my food needs. Every time I am on pred. the experience is different. I hope this remission lasts more than 3 months!

I typically go from awesome/take on the world happy until the lack of sleep kicks in, than i get moody/angry

but never depressed
