I was recently diagnosed with UC and want to try probiotics. I am on Asacol 3x a day and am having some relief :) Can anyone recommend a good brand that works for them? Thanks in advance for your help, this site is a godsend!

Hi,
I am sure you can find many suggestions simply by looking at people's signatures on this forum. Many of us have tried different probiotics and sometimes had different results, so you have to see what works for you. A majority of UC-ers take VSL#3 and Ultimate Flora Care, others like Align or UDO's probiotics. They are all pretty expensive, but beneficial. Give them a week or so to start working within your system.
Hope this helps.
Best,

For an alternate view of VSL--it helped me immensley during my first flare. You can get a prescript
ion, VSL #3 DS which is much cheaper than the OTC version. I take one packet or 900 billion bacteria per day. It has eight different types of probiotic in it, which is something to look for, multiple strains.
I've never seen any evidence of people spamming or pumping VSL, it just happens to be one of the few with studies backing up its efficacy. For another probiotic that has undergone research to prove its claims check out Mutaflor, which is also expensive. (I haven't seen any personal anecdotes here promoting Mutaflor, IIRC)

@ssmith3: If you look around there's also lots of info on making your own yogurt and basically making your own probiotics, I find it helps. I recall there should be a post specifically making yogurt from VSL3. good luck :)

I make my own yogurt and eat some each day, and I believe that helps some, and I've taken Ultimate Flora Critical Care and that has helped... I tried PB 8 and it didn't do a thing for me.
I take VSL DS now and I seem to respond very well to it. Because my insurance covers a large bit of the cost, it's cheaper than buying any of these others and has a lot more per dose. Some insurances won't cover it......seems to depend on the specific company and specific plan.
My son takes Align and it helps him.
Some folks find the probiotics don't do so much for them - we're all different.

I've tried many and the 2 that work the best for me is the Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care and Bio-k both have 50billion live cultures per dose.
