If you aren't bleeding, then I don't understand why you are being prescribed prednisone. Pred is a very strong drug with many side effects. I'd rather get surgery than take it again. I'd try alternative treatments and milder drugs first.
Where is your inflammation located. If it's near the lower part of the colon or rectum, then rectal mesalazines can be very helpful.
Mesalazines are not nearly as strong as pred. However, you probably don't need to be on them during remissions if your inflammation is mild. You need to weigh the risks and benefits and decide for yourself.
Have you tried keeping a food journal to see what, if any, foods/beverages bother you?
Some of the foods/beverages to look out for are:
dairy
fructose (including HFCS, which is now in practically everything)
wheat
gluten
yeast
artificial sweeteners
It is possible to have IBS and IBD (such as colitis).
