Mildest or best antibiotics to take?

Hi,

I think I might have strep - both my kids have it right now, and I experience the usual symptoms; very sore throat, low-grade fever, chills at night. I was going to go see my PCP and, in case I have strep and she prescribes antibiotics, is there one kind that works better for us UC-ers? I am in remission and I don't want to get into a flare because of antibiotics.

It's very subjective with antibiotics.

I get along well with Amoxicillin, Clavulin, Septra and Zithromax. Not Erythromycin as much...but that was more because of nausea and severe headache..not flare-related.
Ampicillin gives me diarrhea...but I wasn't taking probiotics at the time.

As Q said, it's subjective. But, I do ok on Zithromax (azithromycin). Cipro (Ciprofloxacine) HATES me. Those are the only two I have been on since being diagnosed.

I just finished a coarse of Penicillin for strep.  My PCP my recommended that I take probiotics while on it.  I seem to have come through without any drawbacks.  Just take your probiotics a few hours after the antbiotic.

Amoxicillin sent me into a flare. I just recently took Penicillin and was just fine. I think it's different for everyone. Just be sure to take probiotics 2-3 hours after you take the antibiotics. Good luck!

My GI recommended Clarithromycin. He said that was easier on UCer's, in that it is less likely to cause C-diff.

Thank you all for your replies, I appreciate it. I am feeling better, I did not go to the doctor. I took some Tylenol, there is no fever, just a mild sore throat and nasal congestion. I drink a lot of fluids, hopefully it is just a bad cold, viral not bacterial. But I took notes about the different antibiotics for future reference.
