I am just starting Asacol HD (2 pills, 3 times daily) and I was reading the information provided with the meds.  I still have a couple of questions...

Do I take it on a full or empty stomach?

Does it have interactions with other meds/vitamins?

What are your experiences with side effects?

How long until I see an improvement in symptoms?

Has this drug helped you get/stay in remission?

You can take it twice a day...just a suggestion so that you might not miss the mid-day dosage.

I take my meds in the morning after breakfast, but at night it's around 11:00 pm. I sometimes will have a snack some time before that, but not always. So, I'd say my night meds are more on an empty stomach.

I've used Asacol (not the HD) for 22 years. That in conjunction with rectal meds has been extremely positive.

I think you need to be on rectal meds as well...but ifyou're will on pred...once you taper to maybe 20 mg, request the mesalamine enemas.

You should be able to take Asacol on an empty stomach, they don't disolve until they hit your intestine. I've taken a lot of other meds and vitamins with it with no problems. I haven't noticed any side effects. Unfortunately, this drug never gave me remission and I'm still on it and I don't know why lol!

Been on HD for over a year anddddd I LOVE it!!! I too take my pills 2x/day I take 3 in am when I wake up with all my other vitamins and such and then again another 3 right before bed. You don't hve to take with food which is great and I was flaring bad when I first started taking. But seriously in a few days I started improving and after just one week I was pretty much out of flare! Doctor told me
it was the fastest working but he said I would see results in 1 1/2 weeks. I am
sooo happy my dr is so knowledgable and put me on HD.

Hi, im taking regular Asacol, my doctor told me that its the same as HD, no difference. Did you guys choose or switch to HD because its less pills to take or other reason?

I was given the 800's right from the start. Same meds, higher dose, less pills.

Yes, listen to Quincy. Don't try to taoer off pred on Asacol oral alone. Get the enemas and suppository equivalent. You need all the back up meds you can get to get you healed and maintaining. Asacol oral isn't enough in my experience.

I tried and failed with just asacol oral. Had to go back on pred and doc wanted to put me on 6 MP. Said I wanted to give Asacol another try, but add enemas and suppositories. It worked that time. Now I'm pred free and maintaing with Asacol and the mesalamine enemas.
