If I use Proctofoam and it comes back out in five minutes can I use it again or skip it?

I've had that kind of thing happen upon occasion over the years, and I've done another dose, or not, depending on how inflamed I felt I was and if I had the feeling all/most came out or not.

I don't think you'd hurt yourself doing it over again just this once. I've done two steroid enemas per day from time to time in bad flares.

Proctofoam has some kind of pain killer ingredient along with a piddly amount of hydrocortisone. Doubling up on the hydrocortisone would be no biggie, bit not so sure about the other ingredients. If you are sure that most of it came out, you would think it would be safe enough to put back in, but it is hard to know how much is expelled and how much sticks to the walls of the rectum. If it were me, I would put less than a full dose back in to account for what likely remains from the first dose.

Personally I found proctofoam to be completely useless for my UC. Cortifoam packs more of a wallop, but does have side effects due to the high dose of steroid (hydrocortisone) is contains.

I used it years ago and found it to be helpful for the inflammation at the very bottom...... keep us posted, Boxermom!

I've used Proctoform. I hated the dispenser and the applicator. Mine were external and the doctor told him I could just put on a piece of tissue paper and apply straight on. Very expensive...$45 or $50. Also, the dispenser wasn't accurate and only got several doses from the first applicator and the insurance would only cover the cost with a 4 day interval so paid out of pocket for the second. I justpiced up a perscript of pramoxine.. hoping this works...

also, to answer your ? yes and agree with just putting 1/2 back in.

I've never used proctofoam but like CGK said, I've heard people mention that it's a much lower dose of steroids than cortifoam. You may benefit more from cortifoam. If I can't retain an enema or suppository, I will usually use another if I feel I will be able to retain it. Sometimes you just know there is no way in hell you're going to be able to keep anything in and in those cases, I skip it and try again in the morning.

I had some luck with cortifoam during my last flare.

I am not real crazy over the Proctofoam.  I think I will call and ask about the Cortifoam.  I have never tried it.  Are they better than the Rowasa for helping a flare?

YES. In my opinion cortifoam is way better for stopping a flare but it is a decent dose of steroids so you could have some side effects. I was on pred at the same time so I already had side effects, I didn't notice increased side effects from adding enemas. I didn't think I wold ever improve and eventually I did. I also started 6mp aroudn the same time and took a course of antibiotics so it's hard to tell what helped the most but I would imagine cortifoam and 6mp and pred of course.
