Intense pain with prep for colonoscopy

I'm wondering if anyone has had a violent reaction to Citro-Mag and/or Klean-Prep with severe, violent cramping and contractions?

Last night I started my prep by drinking a bottle of Citro-Mag followed by 6 glasses of water; 2 hours later I continued with one package of Klean-Prep dissolved in a litre/quart of water divided into four doses every 15 minutes. By the second glass, I was writhing on the floor in intense pain and by the third, I was literally crying from the unrelenting intensity. It had been almost an hour of this, and my husband was so distressed by my condition, thinking I may be having a dangerous allergic reaction, he called 911.

Eventually, I had to 'go', and once the diarrhea started, the cramping settled down - to my great relief.

Still, my biggest question was whether to continue with day 2 of the Klean-Prep which begins tonight? I can't see myself going through what I did last night x3. I ended up speaking with a pharmacist who believes it was the Citro-Mag and not the Klean-Prep which brought on the cramping and contractions - that the timing of the Citro-Mag taking effect was just coincidental with starting the Klean-Prep. If she's right, then the worst is over.

However, I'd love to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with either of these preparations? Trying to decide what to do tonight!

Thanks Quincy - I continued with the prep last night, and fortunately the pharmacist was right. The first prep (Citro-Mag) was the culprit and I was fine with the remainder of the prep throughout last evening.

Most definitely, I'll be telling my doctor I won't use the Citro-Mag again should any future c-scope be required.

I did get my scope done today but apparently they had difficulty because I had a particularly "twisted colon" and need to get the last 20% done by CT colongraphy.

I've had the same extreme reaction to kleenprep combined with picolax. I get feverish and vomit and the pain is excruciating. I sometimes react that way to the enema option too though. I think it depends how ill you are when you use it. So if I'm cleaning out for a scope when UC is active I react badly but if it's a routine check-up scope I react okay. Hopefully you won't have to go through that reaction again.

Are you eating anything? I know they say not to eat, but I had a similar pain when prepping and it went away mostly after eating clear chicken broth.

My doctor always has me take Phoso-Sodium solution. It is about 2 ounces of clear liquid that you mix with ginger ale or something clear so it is not a large amount to drink at once. It tastes terrible, but it more manageable because it's a small amount. I don't really get much pain or cramping with this stuff.

Next time you have to have a colonoscopy, ask about the Phoso-Sodium.

My GI has me use two fleet enemas a couple of hours before I go to his office for the colonoscopy. I've had three scopes so far and have never had to drink anything for them even once.
