Hello Everyone



My doctor is considering putting me on a regiment of three antibiotics (amoxicillin 1500 mg/d, tetracycline 1500 mg/d, and metronidazole 750 mg/d) for two weeks. Supposedly there has been some success with a study in Japan on this. Question has anybody tried this and was there any success.



I am pretty much on my last thread and surgery is the next option.

I have not tried it in combo but I have tried Tetracycline, Flagyl and Cipro and I don't think I saw much improvement. I think I was only on a 7-10 day course of each. Please let me know how it works for you. Have you consider LDN or another alternative therapy? There is a post in the resources section on the top with some alternaytive treatment options.

I've never tried this, but I just wanted to wish you luck. Please keep us updated with your progress during and after the treatment.

I've never heard of that combo before. My peds GI tried a combo of flagyl and cipro on me a few times

hi,
i was prescribed Rifagut(active ingredient-rifaximin) for a month and it shows alot improvement.

(mild chronic inflammation in rectum and descending colon)

Hello Everyone

Just wanted to let you know that so far the antibiotic treatment has drastically improved my UC.  I want to give it some more time, but so far two weeks after the treatment, I am doing 90% better.  The best part is no more urgency. I have been dealing with that since 2008.  I actually played golf this past weekend and did not even think about a restroom.

If nothing has helped you so far, I would ask your GI about the study see link below. I should also mention that I used probiotics during and after the treatment.

Its well known that Flagyl and Cipro have been used in the past with success to calm things down.  With severe ulcerative colitis the ulcers can become infected, hence the foul smelling bowel movements.  It's a temporary fix and usually patients will require some other medication to keep them going.

Wonderful news diaper man.

I would love to try this combo but my UC is pretty controlled right now. Maybe next time I have issues I will see if my GI will let me give it a go.

I tried Flagyl and Cipro and did not get any improvement at all.  The antibiotics I took where amoxicillin 1500 mg/day, tetracycline 1500 mg/day, and metronidazole 750 mg/day.  It may be temporary but time will tell. All I am saying if there is nothing that worked why not give it a try.

People read the article and ask your GI. I am just saying.

Thanks for the update, diaper man. Which probiotic did you use? Would you mind updating us again about your condition in a couple of months? I would definitely like to hear if this treatment is effective long-term.

Runcycle--I used and still using Align, this is what my GI recommended. I will for sure update in a couple of months or sooner.

MAP (mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) has long been suspected as an infectious cause of U.C. and Chrons, so this ties in with that.

C_G_K Excellent forum thread and related links. I was not aware of all the data relating to bacteria as a cause of UC. There has to be something to it. More research needs to be done for sure in this area.

Hi Diaperman, are you still on your UC meds too? I have printed off all you info and will give it to my Lyme's doctor, he really believes in antibiotics although I was on them for a year, only trying one at a time, never a combo thing. Thanks for the information.

Therearemiracles--I am still taking Budesonide or Entecort. I am going to ask my GI if it will be ok to stop next week. That will be the real test, right now I do not want to stop becuase I am having a good time with no UC symptoms.

Good for you! This is awesome news! I'm surprised that the antibiotics didn't give your gut problems, but if you needed them to kill bacteria maybe that's why they didn't hurt you. It seems when I take oral antibiotics my bloody diareeah is much more. I see my Lyme's doctor in a month and will report on what he says then. Awesome news and I'm sooo happy for you!

Actually the antibiotics did cause me gut problems as they would for anybody not just UC'ers. I did have diarrhea at first but the blood went away. It got better wants I stopped the antibiotics.

Hello thereamircles and all- well I was feeling really good until this morning (may 31).  I started to have loose bowel and blood did appear.  I was doing really good for three weeks after the antibiotic therapy until this weekend. I felt something change in my gut on Friday. I was having real anxiety from my job so not sure if that started the whole thing.  Having said all this, there has to be something to bacteria causing UC.  It just that there is something in our immune system not being able to combat it.  But I would definitely recommend people to try the therapy; it put me in remission at least for three weeks.  Who knows maybe I will get better. Thanks for responding, I'm meeting with my doctor tomorrow to go over this therapy. Right now I'm doing "ok" better than most days.

I'm off LDN and taking Fatigue to Fantastic (finally a multi supplement I can handle) I"m also taking Wild Oil of Orgeno. I'm doing rowasa at night, sulfa during the day. This helps too.

That is good. I hope the therapy works for you long term. I emailed my doctor about LDN. He has not responded yet. But how did it work for you and how did you get the medicine. All I want is to feel good the rest of the summer and play golf. The winter who cares.

I got my scripts and will start tomorrow. I went to my Lyme's doctor and he give me the script for LDN. You can follow LDN Transdermal Cream put me into remission thread, InSoFl has been on it and it's working for her. I may try it again someday after the combo therapy. If you were in remission for a little while on the antibiotics it must have been working. My Lyme's Dr. does believe in the bacterial connection to the UC and Lyme's.

Are you back to your old self with all your symptoms? How far along were you on the antibiotics (how many days in) when you started noticing a improvement?

You can get LDN too over the phone by a phone consult with Dr. Sullivan from Mechanicsburg PA, google him. I have a phone consult and he ordered my script. I got mine from Skip's in Boca Raton FL and I like him A lot!!!! You can call him too and maybe he can refer you to a doctor. Or sign up at at Yahoo LDN forum they are great there also.

Hey Therearemiracles I am not sure how I am doing on my UC symptoms. For the past three weeks after the therapy I have been doing pretty good, then yesterday I had blood and other things. But today, I am feeling good. So not sure what is going on. Maybe it was a one day thing. How far along was I when I started to feel better? I could tell almost immediately because the bleeding stopped. However stool was loose and never was formed the whole time. I would suggest taking a priobic during and after the therapy. But after the 2 weeks of therapy, I was almost 90% normal which is good for me. Anyway there has to be something to the bacterial thing causing this, its just that there must be something in our system that cannot defend the bad stuff, but you never know our floral could get rebalanced someday.
