Hi, all:
I had been in remmission for almost 8 years by strictly following the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) and taking only fish oil and Vitamin E every day. No meds at all.
But last February I "cheated" on the diet by eating one of the worst offenders: a food item made with wheat. A few days later the symptoms began (mucus, D and then bloody watery stools, and vomiting). It turned into the worst flare up ever. Unable to eat, went down to 82 lbs., and then was attacked by my first ever arthritis episode (severe polyarthritis), which made me practically an invalid.
To make a very long story short, I came across this thread, and after doing some more research over a couple of days, I decided to do the FT myself. I live alone, so finding a donor was the hardest part. Then I just bought some Fleet enemas and poured the contents down the drain. My donor was a friend's healthy 2-year-old child who lives far away, so it took a couple of hours for "the goods" to arrive. Then I boiled some distilled water, added a bit of salt, and let it cool to about
95 degrees. The added the saline to the stool inside a ziploc bag and just squashed it until it was fairly well mixed. Poured the liquid through a strainer into an empty enema bottle and had someone else administer it.
I only did three infusions (a few days apart), but had very good results. I was able to hold the liquid for over 2 hours each time simply by shifting my position every 15 minutes or so to distribute the fluid as far as I could. The first infusion resulted in only the cramps subsiding and stopped the nausea/vomiting. The second one got rid of the bloody D, but I still had very loose frequent stools. The third one finally did the trick: within a few hours I felt hungry (ravenous, actually). I had not had any appetite for over a month, so this was a welcome feeling. I was finally able to start eating again. Yay! I wasted no time and began feeding me and my new "friends"
Finally, my digestive system was calm (only one or two mushy BMs a day) and I felt pretty good.
I had hoped that the infusions would also help get rid of the arthritis, but they did not. The arthritis inflammation and swelling in my joints were so bad that I ended up in the hospital anyway. They gave me SoluMedrol IVs, and within hours I could move my legs and arms without screaming in pain. They sent me home with a walker and a prescript
ion for Dilaudid (painkiller) and Methylprednisolone. That was over two month ago. I'm now verrrry slowwwwwwly tapering off the methylpred. I've been eating well (SCD-legal, of course), and have only one perfect BM a day. Today I weigh 93 lbs., and my goal is 103~105.
All in all, I'm very happy with the results of the FT. But, since my donor was a young child, his stool might not have been ideal, so I'm planning to do another FT as soon as I can locate a better donor.
And, I'm so very grateful to all of you who posted the info and procedure about
the DIY-at-home FT. Probably saved my life.
