sulfasalasine is prescribed as a generic for UC, CD and AS with periphereal joint affectation. Much cheaper too.
Yes, it's a hard drug, (it was for me too - could not handle the 3 g/day dose more than 3 months) but not for all. I have a cousin who is on it for his AS for more than 2 years and i know someone who is on it for about
10 years.
I also know people who cannot afford the 5-asa's and they use sulfasalasine because they have no other option.
