Pain at site of Remicade infusion?

Good grief...the bad stuff just never stops for my daughter!  Last Friday she had her 2nd Remicade infusion. The nurse first tried to put it in her hand (which is never a good spot, and my daughter told her that!)  and then ended up having another nurse put it in her vein at her elbow.  Today she noticed a lump on her hand and said it is sore shakehead    I texted her Dr and he said as long as it is not red or hot, that we shouldn't worry.  Of course I am going to worry..my mind immediately thinks 'blood clot' because we have the worst luck with EVERYTHING.  Of couse she is fixated on it which we all know makes it hurt worse...has anyone else had this happen?

My daughter has gotten the ivs in her hand before, she has also had a bump on her hand. Hers were nothing to worry about. After her last procedure, she a bunch of little tiny bumps. She used hot packs on hers if it hurt her. At one time when she was really sick , she looked like a drug addict she had bruises up and down her arm. Also if they have trouble finding a vein, she was told to drink a lot before she came in also would use hot packs to bring out the vein more. That always seemed to work. My daughter usually had the same nurse at her infusion center, she would always tell her where she wanted her iv. Also was given tylenol and benedryl half hour before they started her remicade.

Yeah. I got a nasty bruise on my hand from a Remicade IV there once. Every other time I've gotten my Remicade IV there, smooth sailing. Honestly, I think the nurse might have hit a nerve. ;o)

Yes, i've had it hurt like crazy for a week and a half afterwards.

Yes, I used to always have it in my hand and it would be a bit sore afterwards. If I had it in my forearm, I'd get a huge bruise. Can't win! I used to get warm packs or a warm blanket over my hand before IV insertion. And as also mentioned, have her drink a lot of fluids before going in; it plumps up the veins.

This is a common thing after an IV fails. Putting moist heat on it - a warm wet washcloth will do - will help reduce the swelling and pain. The lump and bruising is a result of a small amount of saline going into the space around the vein because the needle wasn't in the right place. That's why they inject the saline first, because it causes less problem than if medication had gone into that space.

Thanks for the info everyone! Had it happened immediately afterwards, I wouldn't have been so concerned..but for the lump to suddenly appear after 5 days is what had me puzzled!
