Zoloft and colitis

Has anyone read about zoloft and other SSRI's causing colitis? It is in the literature on some good websites. The reason I am asking is that I have been taking them for about 10 years now.  When I got diagnosed with colitis about 6 months ago, I started taking cymbalta. I had been taking pexeva and or zoloft. It ended up actualy making me nervous and anxious, so I went back to zoloft. about a week into taking zoloft, I have had pain on my left side. Now, I am worried as it feels like the pain I got when the colitis first came on me.  No change in bowels or blood, but some pain and a lot of gas. Anybody have any experience about antidepressants causing/making colitis worse? Thanks!

SSRI's give me diarrhea. I've had much better luck with Effexor XR.

Wow, some of them actually constipate me. My bowels were better on the cymbalta but it made me very anxious and irritable. Ugh, I may have to end up trying St. Johns wort and hope it works. These other just have too many side effects. I tried effexor and for some reason, it made me pee about every 15 minutes. When I stopped it, it went away. Sigh.......

I had Colitis before my anxiety came but the Lexapro did aggitate my GI symptoms for the first few weeks. It was basically D and pain. Any changes in dosage of my antidepressant will cause GI issues.

I know this thread is really old, but I'm going to my GP this week to ask for antidepressants and I'm researching the different types. I was thinking zoloft seemed like the best first option until I read the possible link with colitis. I'm also scared of sexual side effects so I'm thinking maybe wellbutrin would be a good option. Anyone care to share which they have had success with?

Sara - I posted on this thread back in '09 lol....anyway. I found that Zoloft and Celexa made my D worse and KILLED my sex drive. I believe that Effexor helped me get into remission and it had NO effect on my sex drive - woot! I definitely recommend it! Of course it's different for everyone, I hope you find something that works for you.

Amy - so your sex drive went back to normal after stopping the zoloft? I'm scared because I've read some stuff about saying the "damage" can be permanent with that side effect. That would suck. lol.

Sara - YES, thank goodness my drive went back to normal after going off of Zoloft! I will say that my husband was on zoloft years ago just for 6 months, it killed his drive and it has never really returned even tho he was only on it a short time. SUUUUUUCKS! cry Stay positive, I'm sure you'll be just fine!

I remember reading that there is a connection between setrasetaline (or whatever the active ingredient in zoloft is) and UC. Will try to find the study.

 I took Zoloft for a few months about 3.5 years ago for depression. I got diarrhea at the time and we initially thought it was the Zoloft so my psychiatrist told me to stop. I did and the diarrhea continued and then we found out it was related to the protein powder I was consuming. I stopped that and the diarrhea gradually stopped, so not sure if Zoloft really had any connection to the diarrhea or not. Unfortunately I have no proof and along with Zoloft, I could point to a thousand other things that could have caused my colitis (Bactrim DS, eating bad food, overconsumption of lactose and meat, anxiety issues, etc.)

I was on Zoloft when my D started, but figured it was just a side effect. A little over two and a half years later, I was diagnosed with the UC. I have found out since that there's a possibility the Zoloft caused the UC, but as I have no real proof, I haven't taken it anywhere.

Wellbutrin is my second choice because there is some proof showing it may help with Crohn's by reducing the inflammatory marker TNF-alpha. I know my doctor is the one who will decide what I get but I'm just asking my GP and honestly I don't put much trust into GPs anymore so I always research things first and basically tell them what I would like. (I had diagnosed myself with UC using the internet before a doctor ever figured it out...and it wasn't until I saw 3 GPs that one finally believed I had more than the stomach "flu" or an anal fissure.)
