Pain on the right side

I'm hoping that someone can help me.

I was diagnosed with UC eight years ago, and have been on Asacol with some success. I have had about 4 flares that have lasted at least 3 months, but I have always gotten in remission.

One month ago, my typical symptoms started, but this time I was having pain on my left side. My GI told me that it's normal to have left sided pain, since I have distal colitis. He took me off of Asacol and started me on Apriso, 4 pills a day. I am also using Canasa suppositories nightly.

My symptoms have remained the same, I have not been feeling better, in fact I am in more pain than ever before.

What concerns me is the pain I am feeling on my lower right abdomen. It is dull and achey, but very uncomfortable.

I'm afraid that this means my colitis has spread, or worse, cancer. Does anyone also have pain on their right side?

I go in for a colonoscopy on Wed. July 27th, so they'll be able to see what's going on. But right now, I'm a nervous wreck.

Anyone care to shed some light? Is right sided pain common in UC?

I have left sided colitis and for years I only had pain on the left side. Last year, I started getting pain on my right side and it got so intense I had to go to the ER - I thought it was my appendix. Turned out that I have Diverticulosis - one pocket on the right and one on the left.

Are you male or female? If you're female, you might be experiencing ovulation or ovary pain. Uc is notorious for causing ovarian cysts. I had one that had to be drained. If you're male, there is no use speculating until you have had your scope - actually either way, it's best to keep the what if's at bay until you have had your scope. Not easy I know. Hang in there and let us know the outcome of your scope.

I am in the middle of a flare and have pain on my right side as well, which is new for me. I had a colonoscopy and there was no inflammation except in the rectum and sigmoid, which is on the left side so like Red_34 said I'm thinking my right side pain is due to my ovaries. If you are female this might be the case for you as well. You might want to check with your obgyn if your colonoscopy comes back okay.

Thanks for your quick responses. I am a female in my mid thirties. It could be ovulation, but normally when I ovulate, it's a day or two, then goes away. This has been going on for a week now.

I do hope that's all it is. I guess I'll just have to wait for my scope.

Red_34, I'm sorry you're dealing with diverticulosis as well.

mom2girls- I am due for a ob/gyn visit, so I'll do that too.

i am in remission and still get pain into the right side or sometimes on the hole colon. could be IBS. or something else.

since there are few days left until your colonoscopy, there's no need to stress yourself. it's an already hard procedure, why bother yourself with more questions?
