Pentasa Enema Side Effects?

Hello everyone,

My daughter was switched from salofalk enema to Pentasa and wondering if she is experiencing side effects or something else.  We were told they are both the same thing only Pentasa is a smaller dose, but when she uses them she feels slight pain for a few mins after up to her stomach, then nausea and headache.  Is this a side effect of the Pentasa?  Has anyone else experienced this?  This morning when she woke up she said she felt crampy spasms in her abdomen and lower back.  Maybe its menstrual cramps but just want to check with any of you who have also taken it before she continues use.  Any info greatly appreciated.

I have not tried Pentasa enemas but I do use Rowasa which is similar. I do notice cramping after inserting the enemas, especially if I am imflamed a bit. Nausea and headaches shouldn't happen from using an enema and could be sign of a bad reaction. I would keep a close eye on her, if it persists, she may not be able to tolerate the enemas. It is strange for her to do well on suppositories but not on enemas (though I am sure it's not unheard of), that's why I wonder if it is possibly her UC symptoms and not a side effect from the enemas?

I noticed the inactive ingredients are different. I wonder if she could be sensitive to something in the enema. That might be a question your pharmacist could answer.

Why did the doc want her to lower the dosage? You're meaning to the 1g dosage?

I believe that the Pentasa enemas are of a larger volume of fluid than the Salofalk, so that might be part of it.

During flares and after using the enemas, I had to work hard to wait out the cramping/urge to purge, nausea, etc.

The next morning, cramping was part of the process and the urge was immediate.

If she has her period, I'd guess that's part of the back pain, as would be flaring in general.

I hope she continues them...but just FYI, if the Salofalk worked for her, it comes in a 2g dosage.

The VSL could also be part of the cramping.

Thanks for replies, turns out she had Chicken Pox! This is why she was in so much pain, feeling weak and dizzy. The spots showed up the next day and she was immediately told to go see the doc for a referal to be admitted to hospital for antiviral drug therapy. Turns out even though she had the vaccine 5 years ago, due to the prednisone weakening her immune system she caught the pox! She was in hospital for 3 days on IV Antiviral drugs and continues oral treatment for a week at home. This was all to be on the safe side due to her colitis and vulnerable immune system. She is doing great now though. Thx

Oh wow...good she was diagnosed with it. Hope all goes well from now on.
