I had the first surgery on June 27 and am scheduled for the second sometime in late September. In my first surgery the j-pouch was created and the rectum and entire colon were removed. My surgeon said it was best to remove the entire colon even though the disease was only in my rectum and sigmoid colon was infected mainly because the disease would most likely move into the rest of the colon and I would have gone through a surgery for nothing. The first 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery were pretty rough while my body was healing and adjusting to the ileostomy. Now I feel so much better than I did before. No more frequent, painful, bloody BM's. No more expensive drugs to take! No more ending up in the hospital when the drugs don't work.
I was scared too about having the ileostomy, but I have gotten used to it as far as emptying it and taking care of it. It is NOT as bad as you imagine it's going to be. It does require a little attention and some planning ahead of time, but IT'S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL! The trade-off has been worth it.
Regarding the feeling on the inside of your body; I do not feel any different!
As I mentioned earlier I am supposed to have the second surgery in September and have the ileostomy removed. I will let you know how that goes if you wish.
Hope this helps and good luck!
