LDN or Antibiotic treatment?

mom2girls,

I would start the LDN - since it's an immune booster and it might enable you to get off or wean off the other meds once you get some good results going.

BTW, I hope you are on some good probiotics to counteract the antibiotics eradicating all good bacteria.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still weighing my options and will probably start something tomorrow (either the LDN or antibiotics or both). Today was a rough day. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!

I'm with InSoFla. Try the LDN first. Antibiotics have been known to cause flares, if not the onset of UC, for quite a few people. Admittedly, the antibiotics responsible for those reactions aren't the three in the combo recommended here.

Either way, LDN is far less risky and has just as much chance of succeeding, according to testimonials here.

Are you really doing 4 packets of VSL#3DS every day? I suspect VSL#3 is the cause of a lot of the gas I have had. Even though my UC is in remission, I still have more gas than a normal person. Do you have an issue with excessive gas?

As for LDN vs antibiotics, I have this gut feeling, albeit pretty much pure speculation, that the two could work well together. The antibiotics seem to get to the root cause for some people, that is a pathogenic bacteria in our colon. The LDN seems to stabilize the immune system, and U.C. sufferers have "faulty" immune systems that results in chronic inflammation (where a normal health person could have the same bacteria in their guts and not get U.C., similar to how most people have h-pilori in their stomach but don't get ulcers).

Like I said, just speculation, but it makes sense in theory.

That's what HW is all about, mom2 :-) Let us know what path you decide to go down. LDN, combo antibiotics and FT are the top therapies running around this board right now, and it's fascinating to read everyone's experiences with them.

CGK, I'm currently not taking 4x VSL DS a day because I've run out :-/ Once insurance from work kicks in, I'll go right back to it. No, it never gave me excessive gas. Not even during the beginning.

Everybody is so different with this disease it's frustrating. It sounds cliche and useless to say it, but it still remains true: try things out and see if they work for you. What works for some simply doesn't work for others.

Okay, I ended up starting LDN last night. I've been better but still bleeding and some loose stool and urgency. I just didn't want to risk feeling bad because of the antibiotics! I hope it helps!

So excited for you mom2girls...can't wait to follow you on your LDN journey!

I just got off the phone with a Dr. in NY that prescribes LDN and I have an appt on Sept 12! I am beyond excited :) I got to speak with him directly, thanks to God (I was going to say by accident, but that was NO accident), and he sounds awesome. So positive, but realistic at the same time. Answered all my questions I would have waited to ask at the appt. I've been waiting to speak to a positive, realistic, open doctor for so long and it feels so good. I knew God was listening all this time :)

I really hope you have a positive experience with LDN. I would have started there first instead of the antibiotics as well. We know we can handle flare ups normally with the kids, but some people say they feel awful throughout the antibiotic treatment and I know I wouldn't be able to handle that, the kids, AND a flare up!

Hope you feel better as each hour passes today! Thinking of you :)

Thanks Mamabee! I started the LDN last night. Today has been rough. Blood, pain, D, urgency, tired! We had a Meet & Greet at my daughter's preschool today. It was all I could do to get out of the house. Had to stop on the way there at a gas station to use the bathroom. Fun, fun! Once I got there I felt fine. This is just awful! I had a great week last week, Sunday was bad, Monday good, yesterday was okay and today is not so good. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster! Please say a prayer! Just when I think I'm seeing the light, I have a bad day again!

Anyway, I want to hear all about your conversation with that doctor! Tell me all the details! I hope you're having a good day! I saw that you are tapering off the prednisone! Good for you! I'm down to 20 mg from 40 mg. I'm sure that has something to do with the good and bad days I've been having.

I should probably start another thread to share my LDN story! Have a good (symptom free) day!!!!

You're doing Transdermal LDN right?

It will take a little time, depends on each individual.

However, if you could do the SCD diet, I believe it would speed up your progress.

What do you think?
