getting colontomy(colon removed) have 1 month to meantally prepare......

this is my senior year in high school and in october i am  due for sugery to have my colon removed. at first i was EXCITED now im NERVOUS i have very little of what to expect. my guiance counclers are wanting me to finish a semester early or be homebound ( a teacher would come to my house)  i have no idea how i feel about it.

not to mention after the sugery ill have an ileostomy bag and will be able to see my intestinse a little OMG. this is my first time on a website like this so

I'm going to second songlady, you should re-post this on the ostomy board, (That's where I usually hang out) there are tons of people there that can help you weigh your options.

I honestly would think this is a question you should pose to your surgeon. There are many many people that are out and about 3-4 weeks after their first surgery. (I am assuming you are having J-pouch surgery) I was only homebound for 6-7 weeks after my first surgery and it was an emergency. I don't see why you would need to finish the whole school year early when you'll only miss 3 or 4 weeks. Maybe you could just do the homebound teacher thing for the weeks you are out? Senior year is so fun and I'd hate to see you have to finish early just because of surgery. Unless of course you don't mind. :)

Come see us on the ostomy board, both now and after your surgery. the people there helped me so much when i had my colostomy and my ileostomy. We can answer your questions on what to expect and help with tips on how to prepare for the hospital etc.
The seeing your intestines part isn't so bad after a few days. you get used to it, most people even name there stomas! Mine were ziggy and zoey. I had my last J-pouch procedure in June and another girl I believe she is 20 or so, just had her last surgery last week. We know what you're going to be going through as well as the anxiety your feeling now - go back to being excited, you're going to feel so much better!!

But yes, ask your surgeon their opinion on whether or not they feel you can finish your senior year. Your guidance counselor doesn't know anything about surgery and its recovery times.

Im 29 years old and had my first surgery on august 22.
Healing has been slow but I'm finally getting better and healing.
I didn't think it'd be so hard but it has been. The surgery could cause a HUGE disruption-I didn't expect this at all!! But I don't regret it all!
