Salofalk suppository

Have questions about suppository -

1. I have used it for 5 months. My doctors told me to continue (0.5g/day), how long/often do you use it?

2. How deep should I put it into rectum? In what depth is the suppository absorbed most? (or most effective)

3. I used it either in the morning or at bedtime, which is more effective?

you've been it on one daily? seems 500mg is an extremely low, almost nothing dosage anyway....
Two daily would be much better....or the 1000mg.


OK, I should remember this, but I don't keep a tally of who uses what...is it you who the doc doesn't want to give a higher dosage of rectal meds..?

It doesn't matter if you use it nightly or daily....up to you. Nightly is when the body is calmer and not active, so less likely to have any leakage if you're normally very active or have any gas during the day.


Regarding how high to put it....when I use the proctocedyl suppositories, I insert it just past the sphincter. I guess to the second knuckle? haven't paid attention exactly. When it's in, squeeze your sphincter and it'll set into place upward, if that makes sense.

You're on oral 5ASA still? how much?

Yes, I used/use 0.5g/day and 2g/day oral dosage. Only the rectum was slightly inflammed at the begging of 2011.
Yes, my doctor wanted me to use rectal med. I am the one that one of my doctors does not believe probiotics is useful...

Yes, I am a morning pooper 'usually'. Sometimes, I poop once in the evening. So, if I use in the morning, can keep it in there till next morning - 24 hours. If use at night, can keep about 8-10 hours. One of my doctor thinks that daytime usage is better since people being active, while the other thinks that nighttime is better since the rectal area close to anus absorbs less than the upper part of rectum. - I am confused. Maybe doctors do not know exactly, or when to use/where to put it does not matter.

Salofalk never worked for me (I'm a cortifoam gal) but you do need to insert it further than what you are (sorry but your finger will likely have to touch your anus to administer it properly), 500mg is the common dosage, but at 2X/day usually in the am and before bed, many of us can't retain rectal meds in the am due to the fact that the majority of us have too many bowel movements starting first thing in the am, so if that happens to be an issue for you as well, ask your doc if using 2 at bedtime is okay (if you want to that is).


But like I said, I prefer cortifoam, it can be uncomfortable to administer as well (what wouldn't be that you have to push up into your anus, it's naturally a very gross feeling but luckily it's a short lasting feeling) but cortifoam tends to go up a little further than suppositories.
